hi guy's,
well i've already ordered a 01' 4x2 sb crew cab XLT V-10 5sp..(tues Jan 23) now..as I still have time to change my mind I'm having second thoughts about which engine as well as the transmission.. pretty well set on the 5 speed.. but the engine ??? so.. i'm looking for imput on what everyone is experiencing.
I dont pull anything heavy.. mostly just running up and down the road... i'm sure the 5.4 is enough.. even with a 3.73..and how much difference in mpg's??

Theres about 2mpg's difference between the V10 and 5.4L. I have the 5.4L (see sig below).
average mpgs=15.5 mixed driving
max average for a tank= 18. (occured 2 times, traveling long way 60mph highway)
min average for a tank= 12.5 (truck was brand new, lots of city driving).
I'd guess the average of the truck you ordered to be in the 13's.
btw: I have the 4.10 rear end and really think this was a good choice. I'm able to pull any hill in OD, yet at a reasonable 2200 rpm's at 65. Your truck is going to be slightly larger than mine..
I have a 2000 Excursion V10, 3.73ls, 4X2. I get around 10 mpg, +/- .2 around town with me driving. My wife gets 9 mpg when she's driving.
On the road, non towing at 74 mph, depending on wind and hills, it's 13.5 mpg +/-. I could probably do better at a little slower speed, but habits are hard to break!
When towing our 6500 lb travel trailer, again depends on wind and hills, but typically 7.5 to 8 mpg @ 65 mph.
I know a guy with a 99.5 Super-duty 5.4 with 3.73 that says around town he only gets around 10.
I STRONGLY emphasize, mpg's VARY geatly depending on who's drive'en and where your drive'en um!

My best mileage is 14 on flat open road averaging in the 70's (not towing). Truck is V10 5sp 4x4 w/ 4.30.
If you ever do want to tow anything though, you'll be glad you have the V10 (thing hauls, with or without a trailer).

I have been getting 14 mpg's @ 4000 miles so far. I would not get the 5.4L without the 4.10 axle. I read posts a long time before I ordered mine, and I believe that the mileage figures were similar or better for the 4.10 due to the weight of the truck. My 4X4 SC might weigh about the same as a CC 4X2. So far, I have been impressed by the performance of my truck, but if I were going to pull anything heavy regularly, I would go with the PSD personally. The reason being that the PSD just gets better all around mileage. At the end of this model year, the PSD 6spds. could have been bought with a big discount.
I average from 11-12 just about anywhere (city and highway). Mine is a 4x4 LWB CC with 33's on 10.5" rims. This probably reduces the mileage with the bigger tires. I also have a 3.73.
Winter driving in 4x4 city conditions got me 11.5 to 12 mpg (Fairly average driving style), E-way, hubs locked but 2wd running 70-75 gets me almost 14. I expect summer driving may get me close to 15 on the e-way.

I have gotten a high of 18.5 in my F150, 3.55 w/ the auto and 5.4.
Around town it's about 14-15, never higher than 15, and as low as 11(once).
I've gotten about 14.5 several times after extended 4wheelin'.
I ave 17 once on a 2200 mile trip.
personally, if i was to get a SD w/o the diesel, i'd go w/ the v-10 or get the 5.4 w/ a 3.73 or 4.10's and supercharge it. You're asking 333 CI to do the work of 444 CI or 42X of the v-10. You do the math....

I have a Y2K F250 SD 4X2 CC SB XLT with the 5.4, auto and 4.10LS axle. I usually run either fairly empty or fairly full, with 4~5 people, "stuff" and towing a 3,250lb pop-up camper.
I see ~11 mpg on my suburban commute and about 16 running empty on the freeway (no cap). I averaged 12.8 mpg loaded and pulling my trailer out west last summer (VA->NM->TX->VA).
