remove muffler?

i was talking to a guy yesterday that removed his muffler and installed some straight pipes(not sure what size) on his 5.4. i am thinking about doing the same on my V-10, does anyone know if you legally have to have a muffler here in florida? if so, what about "branching" off just before the muffler and coming back with some straights, and just leaving the muffler in. will it give additional gas mileage and power? what size pipes should i use? thanks for any info.

Re: remove muffler?

The V10 sounds really bad without the proper muffler. Like a sick outboard motor. You could have the pipe split(dualed) after the muffler if you want. Use 2 1/2" tubing. I'd suggest buying a cat-back kit instead. Don't expect much in the way of power or MPG.
