ringing on cold start

Does anybody's truck have an metal ringing sound on startup, lasts for about a minute. I seem to notice this more when the temp. outside is below 50 deg.. The colder the temp the worse it is.
Any ideas?

Re: ringing on cold start

Does it sound like the old valve lifter clatter like in the older engines. These new ones with the overhead cams have valve lash adjusters so it isn't really a lifter losing oil pressure. My V10 developed this noise about a 1000 miles ago and this morning my dealer ordered a new motor for it under warranty. I have 33,000 on the engine. They didn't tell me what they thought it was but said they would replace the motor with a new long block not a rebuilt. Takes about six weeks for new engine to get here.

Re: ringing on cold start

Red and tough...caught your note on my engine noise thread. Would be very much interested in what dealer or tech has to say is the cause. Is the noise located on the drivers side close to the firewall?? If so, we might have the same issue. Also, do they have an estimated time for installation of new motor?? While at the dealer the other day, they had just replaced a V-10 that spun a main bearing at 60,000. Forgot to ask how long they had the truck.

Re: ringing on cold start

Sounds like you might have the cold piston-slap problem that should have been fixed some time around 4/99. I believe the solution was engine replacement. Not sure if they are fixing them outside of warranty.

Re: ringing on cold start

My dealer had my truck for a week and a couple days. I was told that my engine would be new but it came in a FQR box(have pics) It runs really quiet. I couldn't believe how noisy my original engine was.

Re: ringing on cold start

Gossamar--- Yes that is where the sound is, they didn't say what they thought it was just that it sounded bad and the tech told the service writer to order a new engine. They told me that they would only need my truck for a couple of days. On realy cold mornings the sound stays there for up to two minutes. Other mornings just about 15 seconds.

Re: ringing on cold start

Mine has a sound that is like a tiny brass bell.
I also have a noise like valve chatter that the dealer says is normal.
