Should I Switch to Amsoil?

I've been considering replacing my fluids with the Amsoil products- Filters, Motor and Tranny fluids.
Do you have any feedback, comments or criticisms?

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

Amsoil has "announced" the arrival of their 5W20 oil, but the last I heard, it still hadn't obtained the certifications required for Ford's warranty (check your owner's manual closely).

But, that was a few weeks ago- it may be certified by now. Although I don't use it, many people are very happy with it. Seek out Bob Riley in some of the other forums for the full scoop. He's a dealer.

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

Here's the link to Amsoil's page for the XL-7500 5w-20. I believe you'll find FORD WSS-M2C153-H certification is met, and is listed.

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

I just ordered Amsoil filter and oil for my truck. The cost is not that much different than the Mobil 1 synthetic here in my locale. Plus, on the surface, the Amsoil filter sounds more industrially suited than the Frams/Puro's at the local parts houses.

I'll post if there is any problems associated with the changeover. Never run synthetics before.

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

NoMo,

I have to be honest and tell you that if it was my truck, I'd run the Amsoil Series 2000, 0w-30 instead of the XL-7500 stuff, with a longer drain interval. The Series 2000 synthetics have more robust additive packages and simply hold up better. However, if you want to stick with Fords recommendation, then the SAE 5w-20 is the way to go ....

FWIW,I've worked with polymer based materials (solid propellants, elastomeric insulations, graphite/epoxy composites) for eighteen years as a propulsion engineer for the Air Force and NASA. I've also been using Amsoil since 1978 and am very familiar with all their products.

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

Sorry for the confusion. When I said "here", I meant Tulsa area. I have a friend in KC that is a dealer.

Thanks, though.

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

I would also run the Series 0W-30 and extend the drain intervals to 12 months with a fluid change at the 6 month mark.

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

I just ordered 2 cases of the XL-7500 5w-20 direct and opted for the "Preferred Customer starter pack". If reports are true, the lube should come in at about the same price as the Penzoil/Mobil 5w-30 I've been using. I'll post performance/MPG improvements (if any).

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

There are so many Amsoil dealers/users here, I'll probably get flamed for what follows. Blast goggles on!

Having posted the above, I am disappointed by the lack of professionalism displayed by Amsoil corporate. They seem to be unable to answer simple requests, such as:

1. Providing an itemized invoice.
2. Providing a UPS tracking number.

I sure hope the technical people that manufacture this stuff know their work better than the administrators.

It may be the "oil of the future", but the company is stuck in the pre-electronic-data (circa 1972) past. MOO.

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

Spoon,
I am sorry for your situation, but I attempt to get people to get ahold of me when they wish to get started. For some reason, some think they will get it cheaper going around me or something. Don't know. But, I am aware of what you are talking about. There are ways to get everything you wish for, but it takes a little help sometimes. This is where I come in. The dealers are the support network.
Most manufacturers of any product refuse to sell to the public to avoid this issue, but they offer the convience and get bit for it.

Imagine ordering a truck from Ford, then wanting to talk to an individual and getting personal atttention? That's why they have dealers.

No flames, just an explanation.

Bob

Re: Should I Switch to Amsoil?

Bob:

I wasn't "going around" you, no one told me how the Pref. Cust. Plan worked and that you were a dealer. BTW: I usually ignore banner ads on ALL sites (like billboards on the road).

I was at Amsoil's site and...

No offense taken. Been there. I am a systems integrator by trade, and I can't count the number of times I have provided pre-sales analysis and design just to have someone go to Gateway/Dell/Compaq, etc.. The ironic part is when they come back to me for support after the purchase.

I don't have to imagine dealing directly with the likes of Ford: I deal with AT&T, IBM, Compaq, Cisco, Microsoft, ad nauseum daily.

I appreciate all the support Bob provides for Amsoil on this site.
