I have 48,000 miles and don't believe in the 100k before changing idea. How does one change the plugs on this beast and with which plug?? Is it best left to the dealer? I like to change things before they wear out. I think the tranny is needing done too. Lets have some pointers on these issues from those that have done it themselves.
Thanks

Look in the FAQ section for tranny tips. Check out www.f150online.com for sparkplug tips. From what I've seen it's a pain in the butt. You could prolly wait till 60-75k and be OK.

I too have wondered about the 100kmile plug thing. I haven't unscrewed one yet, but I'll do it the next time I'm fiddling around with the truck. The plugs are on the inboard sides of the heads and each plug has it's own ignition coil. There are two screws that hold the coil on and once they are removed, the coil and a rubber boot should come out exposing a "conventional" plug down below. I think the plug is of the smaller-bolt size.
The last two plugs on the passenger side of the engine look kinda difficult to get to since the A/C evaporator box is in the way. Not quite sure about how to get those out yet. (Without some serious squirming/wriggling/parts-removal)
So nobody has changed the plugs yet?? I have noticed a slight stumble and have changed the fuel filter and cleaned the air filter but it is still there. I have the plugs as the likely problem and really don't want to rip into it without some advise. The manual gives little in pictures. Also with the 5" lift its a ***** to get to the engine.

You get used to it. Imagine me...I'm 5'4" and 125 lbs., and drive a truck with 35s!

Best to grab a 6-pack (and a 12-pack) and ask that scrawny friend to stop by. Put him (or her) up into the engine compartment with a butt-load of extensions, wobbles, u-joints and band-aids. Feed them a beer after every few plugs. Only use the 6-pack during entire installation/removel process if you want the plugs installed right. When all is done, crack open the 12er and enjoy!
Really, the spark plug boots are a b!tch to get off. After that, blow the dust and crap out of the "pit" the plugs are in before removing the old plugs. Then, it's extension/wobble/band-aid & beer. Be sure to hit the new plugs with some anti-sieze compound before threading into those aluminum heads!

Brittonair: when I changed the plugs on my old F150 I added BOSCH +4's. Found them at a local AutoParts store for around $6 each. I also got a life time warrenty on them. I changed my Ford plugs when I only had 40k on them. Two looked pretty bad when pulled out and if I had know then, I would have taken the plugs to Ford and Ford would (should) replace them. Ford plugs are garenteed for 100k. The Bosch +4's have 4 tips on them so you don't have to gap them. They ran very well in my other truck.

When I bought my '91 e250 back in '92, Buick was bragging about 100k spark plug replacement intervals. So I ran the stock motorcraft plugs in my van 110K just for fun. They were a little overgapped but otherwise fine. Fuel injection has done wonders for plug life. Tina, I feel like something is wrong if your plugs were bad at 40k, what did they look like? Do you think they were faulty plugs or did they have carbon build up. There are also other was ways for an engine to ruin a plug, most are fuel related, then there is timing. If you kept the plugs you might want to show them to a mechanic to see if he thinks something is not right.
