I hardly ever use 1st, it's mainly for towing or when you're loaded down. 2nd is fine, you just need to slip the clutch a little more but no big deal. I figure any extra wear on the clutch from that is made up for by the 1 less shift.
On a side note, 1st is nice for idling forward since it'll move the truck without any added gas (reverse is the same). Since this basically give us a 5-sp with a L gear, I wish they offered the 6-sp with the gas engines. Then again, a 2-sp rear end would also be nice but probably not going to happen on these trucks...
