Hey guys, question for you.
I've noticed that when I pull a long steep hill for any resonable amount of time, that when I stop and get out of the truck there is an burning odor that can best be described as the smell of a new exhuast system on a new truck(break-in smell). It eminates from under the truck, mostly mid-truck. It has done this since day one, and although it doesn't worry me, I'm curious what it is and if anybody else has the same smell? I'm pretty sure it's the exhaust, but I've had a gibson cat-back system on since about 10k miles and no change from stock exhaust to aftermarket. Maybe the cat converter? Any ideas?
Sorry for the boring post. Boring day.

I would crawl under the truck and see what is cooking. It is most likely the cat cooking something near it. If insulation is too close it can catch on fire. If you had undercoating applied, they may have gotten too close to the exhaust with it.
granitehauler, Its weird that you bring this up! I've just started noticing a strange (exhaust?) smell too. I've been pushing it hard lately, since I'm getting a new motor and the smell is more noticeable.
It smells hot, but weird.
I smell it mostly at the rear, but other places also. Usually a cat smells like sulphur. This is not that kind of smell.
What is it?

Double Tap, I've got 16500 miles. I've pulled a 10000 trailer for several thousand miles. Never smelled the smell until recently. I have had a lot of new cars before and never smelled this smell. ????

and i thought it was just my truck! i noticed it too since my truck was new, this slight charred sort of burning smell when i sniff around the rear wheel well after running hard--and i thought it was because of my aftermarket exhaust too.

You might want to look at your spare tire. I had a smell for a long time especially after pulling a pass with my 5th wheel. There was a spot melted into my spare tire where the exhaust pipe was too close and it burned about 1&1/2 inch into the spare. Relocated the pipe and lost the smell.
