Condition of the engine, quality of the kit, competance of the installer, and preventative maintenance of lack of it all contribute to or are factors to consider. On a good well maintained engine you can expect some of the better kits to last the normal life of the vehicle. If you don't try drag racing it the power train should not wear any more than normal.
Biggest downsides: Will void any warrenty on the power train. Initial cost $3-5K, slight increase in maintenance (preform services more often) and higher octane fuel cost.
Secondary consideration to dependability is the desire of the operator to TURN IT ON hard and often. I have turbo or blown several street cars and know that this is a very strong desire that is hard to resist.
