Test Pipe??

Does anyone know where to get a test pipe in order to take off my catalylic converter? Can I get one from a local muffler shop when they install my Flowmaster 40 series or do I have to order one?? I'm clueless, help.

Re: Test Pipe??

test pipe? what is that?

if you just want to delete your cat, just have the muffler shop cut the pipe before the cat... then when the put in your flow, they can weld a straight piece from that cut to the muffler.

some shops might not do this as it is illegal.... but keep looking if the shop you had in mind says no... plenty will do it.

Re: Test Pipe??

I used a peice of 5x5x3/8 plate and cut a 3" hole in it with a hole saw, marked the flange holes drillled them then welded a 3' peice of 3" pipe into the new flange. I didn't really think that it gave any more power that I was looking for. It certainly did let a WHOLE bunch of sound through if that's what your looking for. The worst part about it was that it made my Flowmaster muffler sound like a coffee can. I have since put the CAT back in place, the coffee can sound drove me crazy.

Re: Test Pipe??

I did exactly what F350 did. Cut some flanges and even made flanges for both ends so replacement would be easy. Let me tell you it got LOUD! I noticed no improvement in power/mpg. I had the cat out for a week and couldn't stand it any longer.
I put the cat back. I wouldn't recomend removing the cat. BTW, the cat is huge inside. Plenty of cross area. It's also like a thick window screen. You can see light through it.

Re: Test Pipe??

Why not straight pipe it(the muffler) first just to check it out......unless too many have already done it with miserable results? We'll put the stocker back on if it doesn't work out.

You know how the SC sounded with 2 chamber flows and no cats - "coffee can" is right. I think cats would have toned it down favorably. Granted it was a 6.

straight pipe:

- 1 pipe cutter
- 1 3' mild steel pipe or flexpipe
- 2 band clamps (to get it to the muffler shop for a quick weld if it sounds good enough to keep)
- 1 case o' suds
- 1 afternoon on the driveway
- 1 quick trip around the block with no muffler and pipe termination under the truck just to scare the kids and grannies at the grocery store

Anyone tried a Dynomax welded oval or bullet . . .or Borla XR1? Magnaflow resonator with straight pipe and no muffler? Can you comment relative to Ford Windosor V8 sound?

Re: Test Pipe??

the 10 will never sound like the 8..... just get it out of your mind..... it is a lost cause to be looking for that nice 8 sound!

now... the straight pipe... i was going to go this route at first but two seperate muffler shops as well as a buddy that is a service manager for ford talked me out of it... all calimed that the lack of back pressure that the muffler provides would mess with the O2 sensors. (but, those that have a striaght pipe have not piped up with any complaints...)

Re: Test Pipe??

I was running a straight pipe. Had them cut out the muffler and weld in a shaped pipe. Was fairly loud when you got on it. I would cause car alarms to go off just from starting up if they were parked beside me. I never had any O2 sensor problems. I run headers and the 40 series Flowmaster now. Getting a mic soon so I can post the sound wav.

Agreed. Just trying to talk about it relative to something we all know - at least a reference point to compare tone, volume, etc. Granted, 10 cylinders fire differently than 8 and it's gonna sound different no matter what.
