TICKING???

HELLO IVE GOT A 99' F-250 EQUIPPED WITH THE TRITON 5.4 AND LATELY BEEN HEARING A TICKING OR TAPPING YOU MIGHT SAY.IVE ASKED AROUND PEOPLE SAY IT COULD BE A VALVE COULD BE EXHAUST LEAK OR LIFTER...I OPEN THE HOOD LISTEN AND CANT HEAR NOTHING TILL I GET BY THE WHEEL WELL ON THE RIGHT SIDE...LIFTERS MAYBE IF SO WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?? I KNOW ITS NOT EXHAUST LEAK I GOT A SINGLE STRAIGHT PIPE ON IT AND SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD SINCE THE DAY I HAD IT PUT ON.....ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...THANKS AGAIN
TRUCK HAS 108,000 MILES SERVICED EVERY 3,000

Do you have headers or is it the stock exhaust manifold? If it's stock, check to see if the manifold bolts have broken. It's fairly common. By the way, turn off the cap locks as that's considered yelling here. By the way, WELCOME to TDS!

sorry bout the caps thing...thanks for the info. i dont have headers but i will check the manifold bolts this weekend see if they are broken

were the plugs changed at 100k? maybe they were or were not, but maybe they need to be retorqued.

i am not to familiar with piston slap, but does the ticking go away after warming up?

i changed the plugs @ 98,000 and the ticking is still there after warm up im gonna try a thinner grade of oil and add some lucas to it and see if that helps

Use 5w20 or 5w30 oil, no thinner than that. I don't recommend ANY kind of oil additive. Ticking like you've described is usually an exhaust leak. Check around the manifold and check the manifold to y-pipe connections for leaks. Sometimes you can hear the fuel injector firing. If you have a mechanic's stethascope you can listen to them individually to see if one is getting loud. Good luck! Let us know what you find.
