Should a person use tow haul mode no matter what your are towing? Or only with heavy loads? It justs seems like it would hurt mileage when pulling an empty trailer. Trailer is about 3200# empty and using an 06 F350 with the 5.4.
Mark thanks for answering this question. I have always gotten better mileage pulling my 10,000 pound travel trailer when not using the tow haul mode on the interstate. I use it on 2 lane roads, when traveling through cities, and on steep grades to help with the braking.
It shifts less without it out on the open road and I was worried about lugging the engine.
TOM - Not to hijack this tranny thread, but I am considering a 5.4 L in a F250 with the Torqshift. Looking for real world mileage city, hiway and towing.

Will have to get back with you on that, not had it long enough to tell. What little I have checked was towing about 5000# one way and 3000# the rest of the time. Included a lot of time waiting in line to get unloaded and several starts and stops with some idling. That trip was in the 10 mpg range.

Filled up today, about a fourth of this tank was pulling a 3100# trailer, a little in town, some interstate and two country roads. Got 12.5 mpg.
So far my '08 with 4.11 rear--- 12.2 city, 13.5 highway, 7.9 towing 6000lb travel trailer. What little I've towed the trailer has been grades, some hills, and a lot of RPM's. I'm sure it would do somewhat better on flat terrain.
