Towing;4.10 vs 4:30

Hellow
I am thinking of replacing the current truck in my signature with a super duty probably between 2005-2007. The trucks main purpose is to pull a travel trailer 30 feet long and between 9000-10000 pounds. It is also fairly high. The trucks second purpose is to serve as a people and gear carrier on ski trips. My question is do you think that I would be happy with the performance of a v-10 with the 4.10. I ask because I have been looking for a truck with the 4.30 but they are much harder to find. I know that the 4.10 would be better when unloaded but would I be disapointed when towing? Anyone out there made a similiar transition?
Thanks for all reponses

We have a '92 idi diesel 250 w/4:10 gears and we to a 8,500 trailer regularly (not high) and it does pretty well until we get to the grades and then it groans.... now of course we're comparing apples to oranges but the point is if i can tow a trailer almost that weight with a 92 then you could probably easily tow that trailer with 4:10's in an 05 without a problem. It would also help to have 4:10's when your on your ski trips

4:10 is the magical number. 430 is a little high. You can run out of gear fast. JMHO

Just want to clarify. I have no doughts that a 3v v10 with a 4.10 gear set will pull my camper. I just wanted to know if anyone had made a similar transition and how the trucks compared, old body style 7.3 vs. v10? My current truck pulls the camper okay. I have logged a little over 2,000 miles with the camper in tow. I just want for my next truck to pull better not worse.

For those not familiar, the old body style fords had no intercooler. I am constantly having to let out of the throttle while climbing because of high EGT's. And my old E4OD won't handle any hard abuse. Thus I really don't get to use all of the available engine power from my mods.

I know that a v10 won't compare on bottom end torque while driving around town, pulling away from lights etc... But would I be disapointed while towing on the highway trying to climb with a v10 with 4.10 gears pulling my camper?

Thanks for all any replies!

I beg to differ on your analysis of the power and torque of the V-10. My 2008 V-10 will eat up a turbo diesel off the line unless they do the brake/windup like a drag race start. The new diesels with a turbo must allow time for the turbo to build boost before they really get going. Once they do, then fine, they have power and torque. The combo of the new Torqueshift tranny and newer V-10 is an awsome combination. I have eaten up some new Chevy's, Ford 6.4's and any number of Dodges going up long hills. I leave them behind. That is for a solo trip. Pulling heavy is a little different wiuth the diesel advantage, but not by much. I was towing heavy out of Durango and caught up to a new Dodge also towing some ATV's and we were dead heat up the mountain, side by side. I also had a new 6.4 hauling ATV's and me with a loaded 16' trailer go neck and neck from a stoplight up to 65, no difference. All in all, this new V-10 is a sleeper.

i have an 03 250 V10 xcab longbed w/125k miles without any mods. i pull a 30ft toyhauler about 9k lbs. It pulls it very well and I only have 3:73 gears. I use my foot to control speed and keep it in OD when pulling not cruise. It ALWAYS has plenty of power if i need it. I usually pull at about 70 mph on interstates and it runs and pulls great even over the mountains of VA. A newer 3 valve would do even better. I have been very pleased with the ride and pulling capability of this truck. I like the 3:73 but would rather have the 4:10 as every one I have talked with says there is virtually no gas mileage difference and I would believe them getting only 13mpg unloaded. Pulling the weight you will be pulling you should have all you need from the V10 w/4:10 - I would not see a need for 4:30 unless you plan to pull more at some point.

if you look on some 4x4 fourms there is a site that will let you know what gear, tire size, and rpm, to match up with.

to high a number and to small a tire you can pull tons, and forget about doing 75 mph down the fwy.

to low a number and to tall a tire, no pulling and better hwy speeds, and mpg.

you need to know

A: what rpm you want to run.

B: what tire size you want to run.

C: were are you going to do most of your driving. (hills or flat)

D: do you want mpg or better towing.
