I was wondering if anyone has had a lot of trouble with there transmissions, I keep here bad things about fords tranmissions from people and wonder if I will have problems, I pull a 8000 pound trailer semi regular and plow snow, My truck is a 2000 crew f250 with the v10 auto 4wd. The rate of failure seems to be inline with the other manufacturers. That being said, I had my tranny replaced or rebuilt by Ford twice before my warranty ended. Both failures were attributed to poor quality parts. The last time it started to go, I took it to an independent shop (my dime) and had them build it up. So far, so good. For every failed tranny though, there are probably tens of thousands that go the distance. If you want to help it out, put in a built torque converter, additional or larger cooler, better quality seals, a tranny guage, and do regular fluid changes. Just my .02.
No problems here. But I put a temperature gauge on mine for piece of mind.... so it never to gets too hot without my knowing it.
Only time I ever seriously overheated my transmission was when I buried my truck up to the rocker panels in the mud in my own backyard. Didn't want to wait for the backhoe operator to come back from lunch, so I tried to rock it out. Wrong! Just dug a deeper hole, and had to shut it down as the tranny gauge approached 300 degrees. Backhoe had to dig out a couple scoops of mud just so we could get a chain onto the tow hook. Changed out the tranny fluid two days and <10 miles later; been fine for >40K miles since.

I have also heard the same as you, I have plenty of friends who cuss their Fords just because of the trasmissions. But it has not been the case for me. In my life, I have owned 6 Fords as "daily drivers" and have never had a trans failure. The 2 current Fords (the wife has an Expedition) have 210K miles between them and both are still running the original 4R100 transmissions. Before my SD, I had a Bronco that I sold with 200K on it and the E4OD trans was original and still worked great.
Like anything, you gotta know how to treat it so it will hold up.
