Utility Caps

Well, I placed my order.

Now I'm shopping for just a few aftermarket items, the major one being a utility cap.

I want a steel utility cap that is roughly the same size as the standard fiberglass or alumimum caps. I want full length tool boxes on both sides and I want to retain the tailgate. I sit on the gate too often to give it up. No need for ladder racks. I want windows in the front of the cap and in the rear door. I would actually like to have a sliding window in the front but I think that might be tough to get. Never seen it.

Anyway, who makes the best steel utility caps and where can I get one in the Harrisburg, PA to Baltimore, MD area? Thanks.

Re: Utility Caps

Homegrown has a really nive one on his rig. I'll try to find out what it is, or better yet, "HOMEGROWN - if you're prowling around out there, answer this man's question!" There, that should do it.

Re: Utility Caps

Thanks for the compliment Robb. Mines an aluminum DCU series from A.R.E. I looked at steel also, but they were all too heavy for me to remove myself. The steel ones I liked were from Reading and another company I forget the name of. I'll call the dealer where I looked and post the name here later.

Re: Utility Caps

Sorry, looks like I was mistaken - the only steel cap I looked at was by Reading Body Works. I looked at the Servis brand, but they only make a utility bed, not a pick-up cap. As far as the Reading units I looked at, they looked to be built extremely well, with a powdercoated primer that is painted by the dealer. Cost was 30% higher than an aluminum cap. Hope this helps. Re: Utility Caps

Thanks guys. I tried to find Reading's website. Tried the usual suspects - no luck.
Then I did a search. Man you get a lot of hits when you do a search on "reading"!!!
None of them have to do with Reading Truck Equipment, though. Most concern literacy and a few involve Reading, PA and Reading, CA. I'll keep trying. Only 23,425 more hits to explore .

Re: Utility Caps

Thanks, Homegrown. I stopped by a couple dealers today and snagged brochures from Reading and A.R.E.
Looks like the Reading cap cost about $2,800.00, painted to match and installed, extra hundred or so for the sliding glass window.

Re: Utility Caps

OUCH!!! That's a chunk o' change, but judgeing from the '81 in your signature, it looks as if you too get your moneys worth out of things. If you didn't order the trailer towing mirrors, I'd recommend trying to modify your order - with a solid sided cap on the back, they'll be your only way to see along the side of the truck and the smaller mirrors leave a lot out of the view.
