hey ? for all u v10 guys. my cousin does maintance on his boss's excursion and he said for the last 2 oil changes it seems like only 2-3 is all thats draining from the pan when he changes it. he said he looked it over really well and cant find any visible leaks nor does it appear to be burning any. no smoking or anything that would lead one to believe its burning it. no signs of any in the coolant.??????
he doesnt have comp access and ive never seen the truck. just figured id see if anyone here had seen something remotely close to this.

I'd think you'd see or smell some evidence 3-4 quarts of oil disappearing.
Are you sure it was being filled up with the right amount in the first place? There was a recall on V10s, like 5 or 6 years ago where they were shipped with improperly marked dipsticks. If you put in the recommended amount of oil, the dipstick showed it as being about an inch or more above the "full" line. But I thought this problem was mostly found on motorhome chassis.

yeah same here. my cuz has been a tranny man all his life sooo i know that he isnt a dummy and like i said i havent seen the truck. but it makes no sense at all. however the dipstick would make it make sense. thanx

The dipstick isn't going to account for that big of a discrepency. Allowing a quart+ or so for the filter, you should still get 4-5 out of the oil pan. The V10s will "use" some oil between changes. Many will lose up to a quart every 3000 miles and this is considered "normal" by Ford. Next time he changes the oil, tell him to check the level on the dipstick first. If he's down as far as you've said, he won't show much if any on the dipstick.
Is anybody checking the dipstick between oil changes on this thing? It ain't good to run them that low. The oil pressure switch only needs 7 psi to keep the warning light off, but 7 psi doesn't give a whole lot of lubrication where it's needed.

My V-10 takes 6 qts and at every oil change its short 1 qt. been this way since about 30k miles...
I have NO leaks..... So its must be burning it ?????

Has he measured how much oil he drains? The 5W-20 oil drains pretty quick when it's hot. Maybe he's draining more than he thinks he is. You said he's a tranny man. Transmission fluid drains like molasses compared to MC 5W-20.

If you down a qt when you drain then all that is going to come out is 4 qts.
I agree with above statement. Is anyone checking the level during normal operation? My 7.3 hold 4 gal and I check it every other fill up.

I bet it takes 15 minutes for all of the oil to drain out of the engine to the oil pan, It probably holds a quart up there for ten minutes. 10 pistons and rods worth and the huge cylinder heads. Does he pull it in and just drain it or does he walk in and just drain it after it's been sitting?
