I am giving some thought to the purchase of an additional Pick up.
I enjoy my F-450 4x4 Lariat, but it gets real old having to clean the truck everytime it makes a trip to the Ranch. Seems dust can enter and cover the entire interior a whole lot easier than I can clean it.
I am looking at going with a Reg cab, XL, F-250, 6-speed. Can't decide between the 5.4 or the V-10. I can get a 5.4 with either a 3:73 reg or LS or the V-10 has the 4:10. Deep down I like the idea of the V-10, it's not the norm. Like the idea of more power, the no replacement for displacement thinking. Can't say I am crazy about projected MPG.
So real world give me some feedback. Are you pleased with the V-10. Those of you with the manual 6-speed what are you getting MPG wise. Is the transmission an easy shift or rough truck shift. Is the V-10 fun to drive, what is seat of the pants experience like. I can get a 250 as described with the V-10 in the $15,500 price area, do I jump on it or run like a V-10 powered buyer?

I have an '06 V10 with only 4500K on the clock and no towing yet, so I'm no expert. That being said, I'm very happy with the truck & think the $600 option over the V8 makes it a no brainer. I get about 12 MPG & I'm told the truck doesn't even break in till 7500K. My '94 351 V8 never got more than 14MPG & is half the truck of the V10. The problem with a V10 is they are very hard to find unless you order new. I have 3 dealerships within a 100 mile radius & found one V10 (plenty of 6.0s). Mine is a Lariat with all the bells & whistles & listed for 46K, so if you could find one at the price you listed I'd jump on it. I would suggest you go to the V10 forum on Ford Truck Enthusiasts where there is tons of info on this engine from folks much more knowledgeable then I. In fact, they sold me on the engine when I was considering diesel. Good Luck.
Johrjen. I have a 2002 F250 XLT CrewCab, Auto, with the V10 and a 4.30 LS. I bought this unit to tow with and does it tow. At 42,000 it seems to get stronger every day. As you can see, I don't put too many miles annually but when we tow(actually a double tow) I have a Triple Slide Cardinal 5th Whl that is 36'hitch to ladder plus a second trailer with two ATVs or a John Deere Yard Tractor/mower. This is the nicest unit I have ever owned. I am very seldom on the road solo but with a two-wheeled trailer on behind I never get more than 10-ll mpg. When I tow my "train" its 6 mpg or 5 if the wind is blowing hard. I pull some long steep hills going to our country place in Eastern Kansas through the flint hills. If gas mileage is a biggie you won't be happy but if you want to drive a sweet driving unit you will be extremely happy. The 4.10 vs my 4.30 would help a little bit. I am so happy with my V10 that last week I ordered a new 2008 F350 XLT CrewCab(SRW)4x4 with the V10, auto and all the bells/whisles.
I post over on FTE as Wrenchtraveller and I have helped a few folks pick a V10 over a sick-oh based on my past experience with diesels.
Never heard anyone complain. My 05 V10 Torqueshift is fantastic and read Liketit's post on this forum on me blowing smoke to get more info.
I feel the 5.4 is great in an F150 but in a 7000 pound SD you want the V10 and fuel use will not be that much different and the V10 will make you a proud owner. Good Luck.

For what you are looking for I would go with the V10. I just did the same and picked up a x-cab, 4x4 with 4:30 for a knock around truck. It will tow and work better than the 5.4. I have the auto not the 6 speed and I get 13-14 MPG on the road and around 10-11 in town and 8ish towing. And you have the F450 if you need to tow!!!
I have an 03 F450 V10 6 speed. Fuel mileage can't be compared to a pickup, but is 5.9-7.7 on mine. It is about 11,500# empty. The 6 speed is nice shifting, not very truck like, yet still not totally like a car 6 speed. LS

Hey guys, new to this forum. I'm considering a 2000 350 4x4 V10. It has 125K on the clock and automatic trans. What should I be concerned about and what myths should I forget. I think 99 was the problem year or was it. I want it to tow a fairly heavy load, close to 16K. Thanks.
If you can find/afford a 2002 you will get an increase in HP and torque. I can't remember what the numbers were for the 2000's but I'm pretty sure (sunrise's site is not working ) the 2002-2004's had 315 HP and 425 FT-LBS.

I've got 75,000 miles on my '00 Crew Cab F-250 V-10. Average mileage overall has been 12.3mpg. High was 15 pure highway. Low was 8.6 pulling a trailer (fast). I have had no troubles and wouldn't sell it for what they're asking. Go for it.

ok, i hope i get alot of replies here too. i have diesel and have had 6 of them. i love them, even the 2 6.0's i had, but i too am starting to weigh the costs of a diesel. i am only getting 12 around town in my truck, and i am pretty sure i can get 10 or just a tad under with a v10. what i really want to know is are you guys really getting 12 and 13 with those v10's?? i have never heard such a thing. been all over the country, pulled my 41ft travel trailer to south dakota and texas, iowa, tennessee, etc, and never heard anybody getting that good of mileage. also, anyone else pulling real heavy with v10 with 4.10 rear and 6 speed? i do not want 4.30.
05 V10 with 6spd and 4.10s. I get 11 on average around town, and thats always with a fairly heavy right foot (the V10 is just so much fun above 3k RPM). On the highway, steady cruising speed of 75mph I get around 13, maybe 13.5 Heaviest Ive towed so far is probably around 7k, maybe 8k. Really not much weight at all, but mileage didn't go down much with this load, and power was not an issue by any means. The 4.10s seem like a good gear to me with the V10 and 6spd combo. The motor will lug down pretty hard, but drop out of OD into direct, get the R's up and the motor will really start to pull hard. I'm not sure how 4.30s would do RPM wise in OD, but the 4.10s seem like a good match to me. Ive heard alot of people say the 4.30s are worth the extra grunt for towing, and mileage decreases really arent noticable....

Our 05 X w/the V-10 and 3.73's averages 12.5 in mixed city/hwy miles. I check the on-board computer vs. hand calculation and it's never more than .2 tenths off. Did I mention it's my wife's daily driver and she drives it pretty much like her work car, a black/white Crown Vic. My 06' F250 V10 automatic,4.30's,gets about 9 winter and 10 summer back & forth to work. Only made one long trip and got 10 but we were running 75 or 80 most of the time and my 35" tires don't help. Oh well'
