Towed my boat 200mi. on Thursday and noticed a burning smell but could never locate the source. Made the same tow today and 3 miles from home I looked in the mirror to see smoke trailing from the truck. I pulled over and noticed tranny fluid on the exhaust and when I got home I located the source. The fluid is coming from the hole in the bottom of the torque converter housing. The only thing ever done to the tranny is a new filter and swapped to Amsoil about three months ago. Help me out guys, whats the problem.....Thanks...
Is it possible that you overfilled the tranny with fluid?

Its possible, but it was serviced 3 months ago. Unless the hotter days are causing the transmission to run a little hotter. If that is the case then where is the overflow leaking from? The boat only weighs around 2500 lbs, but I was towing hard. 75-80 mph Interstate with lots of hills. I towed the same boat 400 miles two monts ago, same driving styl with no problems.
I just had my 2nd tranny r&r'd for the same thing a couple weeks ago . It got progressively worse to the point where I was leaving a trail just pulling it out of the drive onto the street (cold engine). Do not drive the truck as the fluid is running out the inspection plug and draining into the heat shield. The potential for flash fire is good . More than likely your torque converter has failed. There is a tsb (I don't have the #) for it. My dealer replaced the TC, front tranny pump, a bunch of seals and gaskets. Just towed the camper home yesterday with no problem. Take it to the dealer asap if you're still under warranty. Also, check your PM.
Thats not what I wanted to hear Sounds expensive. The truck has 55K on it and no extended warranty. Maybe its time to trade or I may just keep driving it and keep a fire extinguisher close at hand
Was the torque conv. bad or just leaking? The tranny shifts normal.
My torque converter apparently went bad, wouldn't lock out. I knew something was up when I lost about 3 mpg this past winter. The other possibility is that you have a bad TC seal. If the TC is still locking out, that may be all it is. I wouldn't try to get out of your truck just because of this, used values are really low and if that's the only problem with your truck, fix it and get on with it. Find a reputable tranny shop and get an estimate for both repairs. You may consider an aftermarket TC like Suncoast if you have to replace it. Maybe put in the Sonnax and Tricumulator mods too. If it's gotta be apart, might as well strengthen it.
Thanks for the info Robb. I really dont think I have a problem with the TC, cause its shifting and pulling normal. I did drive it 45 miles to work today and looked at the leak when I got to the parking lot and there was no fluid coming from the grommet hole but there was fluid coming from the x-mission/shield seam. If you reach your finger in the grommet hole you will find fluid, but Im still not sure the exact location of the leak. A good friend of mine owns his own auto repair shop and has been turning wrenches on cars since to 50's swears up and down its the synthetic lube that has caused the leak. He told me to swap back to what Ford puts in and if I'm lucky the leak will stop .
