V-10 verses 460 longevity

All,

Considering a used F-350 with 460 and 45 K miles or a used 99 V-10 with 50K. Assuming that both have had the same care, oils changes etc. what have people had in terms of miles on both engines.

Thanks

Re: V-10 verses 460 longevity

Will turn 40,000 this weekend - no problems. One of the many advantages of the V10 is higher mpg than the 460. Another is you can say "I have a V10!"

Re: V-10 verses 460 longevity

I have a 2000 with 119,800 on it. Just change the oil every 3000 miles. The only problem that I've had was last week, had to replace the IAC valve assembly for $168. Love the V10. Doesn't sound as good (exhaust note) as the 460 though.

Overhead cam vs. push-rod. The V-10 has less moving parts to wear out, also better fuel economy. The V-10 should last alot longer.

Re: V-10 verses 460 longevity

Had both and liked both. The 460 is more of a grunter and falls on its face when reved up a little, but the 10 is a better package. Better performance in the 10 as well as better mpg. It does rev higher to make its power, but makes the gearing far more useful with the much wider power band. As far as which will last longer? It depends how you treat 'em and what you're using it for. If I had a motorhome, I'd probably like the 460 better, but in a pickup, give me a 10.

Re: V-10 verses 460 longevity

A long time researcher here. The facts are in on diesels so what can I expect when the V10 gets to 175,000 to 200,000+ miles range? Can I expect an engine change or just some basic head repair or minor rebuild? This is a big inquiry so bare with me. The tranny is another area of concern but then it is a diesel concern too. I am not worried about the truck itself but a little reassurance on the powertrain future troubles would be great. So charge on with any info that may assist my inquiry. 2001 F150 4.6l reg.cab and a 1963 F250 rebulit 390

Re: V-10 verses 460 longevity

I have seen many many 460's go to 250k easy, with no overhaul at all. Highest I have seen without any internal work was 400k. Mine did 225k, but I abused it pretty hard(Rough climate), too much sand, it started burning oil, so I overhauled it. I have seen v10's with up to 150k, but not higher, they are all still on the first engine, but one that was changed for piston slap. They have not been out for all that long, but I feel they will last just as long, if not longer than a 460. I have not seen a psd go any futher than a 460 before they had to have things done, so from my experience the 460 and the psd last the same(this is over about 50 trucks of each). I see no reason why the v10 would be any different. Hope this helps, Mason
