V-10 What a PIG!!!

i know im going to get beat up pretty bad on this one but here goes. being on the market for a new 2001 F-350 superduty i went to my local ford dealer and test drove 2 different 2001's with the v-10 (one with 4.30's and one with 3.73's) and i gotta tell you i was disappointed to say the least. i currently run a 97' F-350/3.55 rears and 35" bfg's with the old reliable but thirsty 460 and it has twice the balls of both the v-10's i test drove. i deliberatly drove both axle configurations to give the motor an honest chance. ford can put all the numbers it wants on paper but when it comes to all out balls to the wall pulling power the old 460 got it beat. by the way i wont be purchasing the v-10 anytime soon. im now test driving the powerstroke and who knows i may just stick with old reliable.

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

You should go with a vehicle you are happy with. If you like the feel of the 460 better, than you should stick with it. It looks like you may have a chip and exhaust mods on the 460, heh? Do you think that helps you from a stock arrangement?

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

Actually, I think the 460 is rated for more torque than the V10, which really adds to the seat of the pants feel comming off the line.

As they always say, theres no replacement for displacement.. 6.8L vs 7.3L (i think that 460 in Liters is about 7.3). You do the math.
Stick with your 460 if your happy with it..

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

Ford 460, your handle says it all! You are a die hard 460 lover. I understand. I've had two myself. As recently as 97. But your assessment of the V10 is off by a bunch! The V10 pulls better by a longshot! The characteristics of the 460 as compared to the PSD are like night and day. Suit yourself!
The V10 is superior, IMHO, to both the PSD and the 460.

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

FORD460,

Don't forget that the 2001 F350 weighs MUCH more than your 97 F350. Like 1000 to 1500 pounds more.

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

My boss has a 91 F-250 with the 7.5L 460. It can haul and tow more than my 86 6.9. It is an auto and still hauls butt for its age. But like the others said, stick with what you are happy with. Or maybe the two you drove were lemons. But probably not since they were two different ones. Drive the PSD if you want. Then you can join us black smoke guys

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

I too have previously owned two Fords with the 460 in them: a '76 4X4 E250 and an '87 4X4 F250.
I loved the 460. In the 4X4 Van, I could burn rubber on both axles with an automatic. I don't think the V10 would do that.

But, I am happy with the V10. Times have changed. It's a totally different engine and the truck that it's in is also different. I love the new SuperDuty and the V10 works just fine for me. Besides, I get 14 mpg with the V10. The best I ever got with the 460 was 10 mpg downhill with a tail wind.

Like others have said, you gotta go with what you're comfortable with. Me, I'm comfortable with the V10.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

steve

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

I don't have any dyno number to back this up, but I think the engine makes much more power when it's broken in. I had a early 99 F350 SC SRW 4x4 with the 275hp V10 and 4.30 gears. I traded for a 2000 F350 CC DRW 4x4 with the new 310hp V10 and 4.30 gears. The new truck seemed to be a dog compared to the old one even with the higher horsepower engine. Going over Washington pass I couldn't maintain the same speed I used to with the "old" truck while my camper was loaded. The old truck was broken in though. Now with 6000 miles on the new truck, the power has gotten much better. I think it will surpass the old V10 in power despite the new truck weighing 200-300 lbs more.

Of course, in order to really feel the power you need to get the engine into its powerband. Some people resist reving the engine and so they never take advantage of the capability. Not a problem for me as I also pilot one of those crotch rockets that needs to see 9000 rpm if you want to rip your arms out of their sockets.

Here's the number for the new V10:

Horsepower 310 at 4250 rpm
Torque 425 at 3250 rpm

7.5 liter/460 VS 6.8 liter/415 + 1500lbs...do the math.

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

Knocker, you should put the crap pipe down and step away from the lighter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you honestly think that hunk a junk v-10 is superior to the PSD, you need to check yourself in to a facility and start the lithium ASAP!!! Do you realize that by the time your engine has been turned in to refrigerators that the PSD has just broken in and has another 250,000 miles to go.

There can be only two reasons why someone would get the V10 over the PSD. 1 can't afford the PSD or 2. Prefers gas. Any other notion is completely inane!!!

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

I agree, Wookie, 100%. PSD over V10. But this is the Gas, and ONLY, forum for gassers. Let 'em be

I know I shouldn't judge mass engines from seeing one, but the very first V10 I saw and heard sounded horrible. But like I said, maybe it was a lemon.

I am not here to fight, guys. Just don't want Wookie to be alone

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

Thanks for the aid UApilot, I appreciate it.

As far as crap pipe goes, that was a legitamate spelling mistake. It probably was the fumes, yeah ha bow!!

Re: V-10 What a PIG!!!

No sweat Bentwookie, just had to give you a little ration on that obvious spelling mistake, I thought it was funny.

I was thinking about your comment regarding V10 ownership over a PSD, and I have to disagree. The only reason for diesel ownership is towing. Other than that, the PSD has an obvious thirst for oil, aftermarket chips, filters, maintenance, higher priced fuel, coolant additive, fuel additive, additional non factory instrumentation, batteries, and I'm sure the list goes on. The rewards appear to be noise, smell, sluggish performance, and exaggerated fuel economy on the part of their owners, not to mention VERY expensive repair costs. As far as it lasting forever, it might, but the rest of the truck sure won't. As far as the V10 being a pig, ever been chased by a wild boar?

Please don't misunderstand my post, it's all in good fun, I have several PSD owning friends, and we're always on each other about our choice of whatever. And besides, this the gas forum like UApilot said, so I have to keep the gas torch lit ya know.

Peace.
