V-10 will it tow and go

I am pretty sure I am going to go PSD again, however the less expensive operation of a gasser does appeal. And it is $4,000 less. Will a extended cab 250 4x4 with 3:73 Limited slip v-10 auto handle 8000 pounds easy enough. Would open road driving and some hills be greatly noticed. I will be pulling a trailer for the local high school band from Dallas to the Rose parade end of the month. Trailer is 24 foot and loaded to the max. Any imput?

Re: V-10 will it tow and go

You might like the 4.33 rear end better than the 3.73 for towing. I've got the 3.73 for everyday driving and its fine, but wish for the other when packing a lot of weight, which for me isn't very often. Good Luck

Re: V-10 will it tow and go

The V10 will tow just fine. My 2001 CC 4x4 tows everything I have put behind it with ease. I have gone up to about 8000 lbs recently and towing was a cinch.

That said, I do have the 3.73 gear and would much rather have the 4.30 for heavier towing (over 7000 lbs). The 4.30 will tackle hilly and mountainous areas MUCH easier.

Go with the 4.30 gear. Your truck will not even know the trailer is there.

There are two posts under the 'Longevity' topic describing the v10 in RV use. It is impressive.

Re: V-10 will it tow and go

Go with the 4.3. You won't be sorry. It sound like a steep gear, but I think Ford had it figured right with the V10 and the ratios in the 4R100.

If you go with the 3.73, figure running at about 2700 rpm in third at 65 mph, unless on the straight and level with no wind. (or a tail wind)

Re: V-10 will it tow and go

I have the 3.73's on my v10 also. I would much rather have the 4.30's, especially since I run 285-75-R16 tires. Won't make that mistake again.

Re: V-10 will it tow and go

I want to thank everyone for their reply to my post. You had helped me make up my mind to buy a gasser. However I had the chance to buy a new CC 4x4 PSD for $2,400 back of invoice. I just couldn't pass that deal up. Again Thanks to all.

Towed a 13,000 lb 5th wheel across Massachusetts with no problems at all with a 4.30 rear end.

Re: V-10 will it tow and go

I have a 24 foot car trailer 8 foot high and 8.5 wide, loaded with car and parts pushs close to 9k #'s. A good friend of mine pulled it to florida in his 2000 excursion w/3.73's and back and got 8 mpg.He could not stay in overdrive, 4.30's would have helped to stay in overdrive and would have increased fuel economy. He gets 14 unloaded. I have a PSD and get between 13 to 16 towing same load and never come out of overdrive. I get 20 mpg city and 18 mpg highway due to my 4.11's and high cruise speeds. I like both engines, if I was going to buy the v-10 I would find one 1 year old they loose resale value quick. One friend bought a 00 LTD Exc. a year ago with 20k miles for 27k, another bought a'00 f250 cc 4x4 offroad XLT loaded v-10, red, 12k miles, 8 months ago for 23k. The guy that bought the Exc. wishes he had bought one with the PSD, Tried to trade it but dealer would only give him 23k for it. the other guy doesn't tow much and is very pleased with his truck. Like I said I like both. The PSD runs good stock but with a few mods will fly!
