Has anyone tried to change the Y-pipe on their V10? I have a 99 and the P/S snakes all around before it goes rearward. The later one's look just as bad because the P/S points directly into the D/S at a 90 degree angle. It looks pretty easy to have a muffler shop (or the do-it-yourselfer) cut that junk off and make a nicer set-up.
The banks and probably other headers kits have a lot nicer y-pipe. It looks like an easy way to get a bunch of power w/o spending $1200 on a header kit.
You have to remember your stock headers will still be a choke point for the exhaust. You nmay see some gain from the new y-pipe. Any exhaust shop should be able to set up a new pipe for you. If you watch EBAY you can find the headers cheap.

Some stock stuff, some modded stuff, some "deleted" stuff.....
I modified mine by cutting the stock Y pipe off just below the O2 sensors. I ran dual 2.5 inch pipes back to where the cat use to be, Yes I deleted the cat. The exhaust shop fabricated a custom Y where the two 2.5's combined into one 3, the custom Y then ran into a Flowmaster 70 series muffler. The throttle response was much quicker, the RPM spooled up real quick. A slight increase in Hp was also noticed, but the low end torque shifted up the RPM band. Not good for towing. Now the bad part, the thing was so loud you could not ride in it. After 15 minutes I had a headache so bad my eyes were crossed. I went back and re-installed the cat which quitened it down quite a bit. Now it has a V-6 on steroids sound. The throttle response is still btter than stock, the low end torque is up in the RPM band, and it sounds horible. MPG's may have increased slightly, maybe .3 or .4 MPG. I'm at the point now of not knowing what to do. Since I already have the dual pipes back to the cat I may go ahead and run duals all the way to the back. I know a guy over at FTE who is running this set up with dual Magnaflow's, with a "H" pipe, and he is getting good results. -OR- Go with Banks or Borla headers with the Flowmaster cat back system made for diesels. This would allow me to do away with the 3 inch pipe and go with 3.5 or 4.0 inch pipe. If you don't tow you may want to accomplish this mod, if you tow this mod is not good because your low end torque is really moved up in the RPM band.

Really? Do you have the part number? It would really save a lot of us here the headache of fabbing our own.

Thanks V10 man, but there are two problems with that part.
1. It is a generic part (16" long), not designed for the V10, thus would require additional pipe/joints welds or clamps. A real PIA in that space.
2. It's fabbed from aluminized steel, not stainless.
I've seen quotes of $250-$350 for a custom stainless y-pipe locally. On the other hand, I can buy a Borla bolt-on header/y-pipe combo for about $700. Now: how to rationalize/justify it to the purchasing department.
Any suggestions on the best place to buy these? The going rate seems to be @ $720 at the places I've checked.

Let me just say I don't support the Y-pipe mod. Just seems like your messing with stuff you shouldn't. I just posted the part # for those interested. I fully support the Banks/Borla header route.
