V10 blew a spark plug

One of my super duties a 1999 F250, approximately 275,000 kilometres with a V10 blew a spark plug, in the process it took the threads with it and ruined the head. Is this a common occurance? The only problem with the engine in the past is one of the wires going to a plug has gone bad. Just looking for comments and any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

Don't know what reported here, so look for updates. However, while on another site back in 2K, some reports on spark plugs blowing. As I recall both 5.4L & V10.

Few reports I saw had ALOT less mileage. As I recall there was some connection with how many threads the alumn. heads had & did they really hold the spark plug securely enough. Expansion/contration, alumn VS metal etc, really got technical & over my head. There was a repair kit for the stripped out hole. Dont recall kit, but seemed some success, short of $$$ for new head.

As I recall the new (03?) 3 valve 5.4L triton got redesigned heads. Don't recall if same on V10, but suspect same done. Anyhow, seems you got good service, but still a bummer.

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

I've heard several reasons for the plugs blowing out. #1. Spark plugs were changed using other than Motorcraft. Chamfer on plug that seats to aluminum head not the correct angle. #2. Plug hole was not blown clean with compressed air. Dirt/sand between plug seat and head prevented proper torque. #3. Improper torque on spark plug. #4. Water seeped past the coil pack and filled the plug cavity. The addition of water and the dis-similar metals contraction rates caused plug to loosen. Pick one. Your guess is as good as mine.

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

Thanks for your thoughts, the truck has always had its spark plugs changed at the dealer. The truck is a service truck in a logging business, I am sure there is lots of opportunity to get dust and maybe some water around the plugs. I have another 99 F350 with a 5.4 with close to 400,000 kilometres, the only major issues with it has been has been a few head gaskets and a couple manifolds. Yes I do get good service out of my Ford trucks!

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

Here's a link to Heli-coil, which can be used to repair the stripped threads.

PS If you run a "search" for heli-coil, you can find many places that sell them. Hope this helps you out. SamC2

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

Thanks, I am printing off to show the service department. I plan to put a rebuilt head on it as I need to get the truck back on the road asap, as it goes 7 days a week.

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

Ford specifically says no heli-coils. Head replacement only. Also the AGSF plugs MUST be used. They are different than the AWSF's that came from the factory, and won't vacate the premises like the AWSF's.

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

Yes, they don't recommend the heli coil, I discussed this with the service manager and Ford says it won't hold and if it lets go it could end up with pieces going inside the engine. I appreciate the comments and suggestions, this was what I was looking for. The truck has been back on the road since Weds. Thanks!

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

There is product call "Timesert" and it is a solid body insert and is peened at the top so it will not unscrew.

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

Thank you for your input!

After having replaced the damaged head with a rebuilt and then seeing the cost, I think the next time I will try a Time-Sert. My reasoning would be, with such high mileage on the engines, I will take my chances. If the insert didn't hold and ruined the engine I would replace it with a used engine.

Again thanks for the comments!

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

I have a friend that rebuilds motor cycle heads and this is the only product that stays put.

Re: V10 blew a spark plug

TIME-SERT is a great repair! here is a link for ford heads.
I did the repair on my 5.4L head i took my time and
had it fixed on the weekend. It was well worth it.
The dealer wanted $3000 to replace the head! for
one bad sparkplug hole. p/n 5553
