I posted a couple weeks ago that I removed the hole riddled flowmaster that the previous owner had installed. While the ride is much quieter I still get a lot of growl when mildly(really normal grandpa take offs) accelaterating. The truck is a 99.5 with no mods and about 90k. Not sure if this is normal or a stuck EGR or something. Any thoughts or comparisions? I haven't rode in another v10 so I'm not sure what to compare it to.
Also I know some of yall have the Borla or simular kits. Anyone know of a header replacement to the cat or a new Y pipe replacement. Maybe this is the problem as I still get the flutter around 2k. I plan on keeping it for 5-6 more years so a little money now will go a long way.
No ideas on the weird noise but I know that over on the FTE site there are many folks real happy with the headers from e-bay and I think most had a exhaust shop fab a fairly good two to one collector to dump both sides into the cat.
I can't find it but there is a fellow here on TDS named Stan Wright (sp?)who has a great web page of all his early V10 mods and in it is his photos of the header install.

The V10's really growl and roar. What muffler did you put back on? I had a Borla system on my 99 and for the most part I had no troubles in 90k miles of use. The Borla cat-back was just a tad louder than stock but was a flow through design. The headers are #17172 for a 99.

The V-10 growl I get when driving my truck empty is one of the most fun things I have come across in driving in many years. The 6-spd makes it even more fun. I really have to control myself or I could suck down a tank of gas pretty fast. With 4.88 axle you can imagine that it is like a rocket when empty even though it weighs more than 9000 lbs. It is all stock.

Check your exhaust manifold bolts. Several of mine had broken off (different metals, different expansion rates) and the exhaust leak at the manifold would howl pretty good.
And Banks has a really great replacement set up for our trucks.

Thanks for the replies and sorry to check back so late. To follow up to some questions...the muffler is a standard OEM type. Man when I crank the truck you can't even hear it running. My wife can't even tel when I'm home and the dog is freaking out because it's a new sound.
The growl I guess is the same 1800-2200 rpm level. Probably just the old flutter sound from way back. But I can almost call it a dron type noise. Interesting though it seem to do it a lot less when it's cold. I don't notice when I'm leaving the park in ride after it's sat for the day. To give you some background I'm losing my hearing (right ear almost dead except hears background noise just perfect) so I'm trying to make things more quiet inside the truck to hear everyone.
The Borla header and Stans web site looks nice. About $900 for the kit though. Good thing is the kit comes with a new Y pipe...the suspect problem. The Ebay kits look like they do not include the Y pipe. Plus the Ebay headers say from 00-03 or something. The Borla kit is different from 99 to 00. I suspect that in that kit it may be the longer reach to the cat on the 99. 00 seem to be shorter.
I might check over at FTE about the Ebay headers.
regarding the growl, mine smoothes out over say 2500rpm. After 3k it's really nice but not that noisey.

I just noticed this on my 99. Any idea if this could cause the truck
to ping a lot, or cause a piston-slap type noise at startup? Both
of those problems recently appeared, I'm wondering if they are being
caused by the missing bolts.

Sounds like both of those at times. It seems to disappear, or at least become much reduced, as the engine heats everything up. After mine was fixed, it's back to it's usual, quiet, dependable self.
Thanks Robb... Ended up trading the 99 on an 05 Excursion V-10 this
morning... It was a great truck for the almost 5 years I had it, never
left me stranded anywhere, took everything I threw at it and kept
on trucking... hopefully the new toy will be as reliable as the 99.
