Don't want to start a war here but I have read almost every post on this site and see that some say the V10 is a dog and can't pull like the old 460 and some say its a rocket with plenty of power. Whats the truth? I know rear ends make some difference but I can't see making that wide of a swing in opinions. Looking at CC 4x4 shortie V10 auto 3:73 running emply most of the time. Thanks.

Given the reduction in CID and the added weight of "todays" CC truck vs "yesterdays" X-cab truck, I'd say the new line of engines are pretty impressive. If gas is your bag and there are any doubts, get the 4.30 gears- towing capacity rivals that of the PSD. You'll pay for it with mileage, but then these aren't exactly econo-boxes to start with.
Also, remember that these new engines are OHC. They like to rev and it doesn't hurt them at all. Running RPM comparisons between the two style of engines isn't quite apples to apples.
Damn Boys, get serious! The V10 is FAR superior to the 460! My truck weighs 8 K dry. I can stomp on the throttle and, from a dead stop, whip almost anything that burns gas and everything that burns diesel! My last CC dually had the 460. I LOVED it! After swapping it for the V10 I was glad to see it go. The only problem with the V10 is not performance. Its flutter, piston slap, or whatever. I'll let you know after I get my new motor next week.
BTW, I pull a 10k-12k trailer and the V10 is awesome (except for gas mileage).

The 4.30 gears make all the difference in the world with a 5spd. (I dont know about an auto as I have never owned one...or ever will for that matter)
I pulled a '91 Explorer and a car trailer up Eisenhower pass (steep pass in Colorado mountains) going 70 mph in 5th gear. The trailer probably weighs 1500 lb and the Explorer approx 4000-5000. The only downfall is my mileage dropped from 13 to 11, during this trip. I would occasionally have to downshift to 4th to maintain 70 mph.
I have the banks stinger kit, and a K&N air filter for my power mods.
The V10 is MUCH MUCH better than the older 460. My uncle has a 1995 F350 with the 460 and that beast does have power, but it can in no way keep up with my V10.
Just my 2 cents...

My only experience with a 460 was in my 1973 F350 Camper Special. It had the usual goodies, Edelbrock carb & intake, headers w/ dual exhaust. My V10 is way more powerfull and gets 3mpg better! Remember, the 97 460 only had 245hp and 400tq. The 2000 V10's are rated 310hp and 425tq.

I had a '93 cc dually 5sp. 4.10 with a 460, put 56,000 miles on it mostly pulling a 5th wheel. Now have a '99 cc V-10 automatic with 4.30 gears, this truck will out pull my 93 by 5mph on any given hill here in Colorado. I have 35,000 on truck, new engine will be put in next week had the cold morning rattle on left rear of engine. Trailer and truck fully loaded weighed 20,250 on scales so it is not light weight. Other than the rattle I have been happy with the V-10 and even with the rattle it ran good. I do have a K&N air filter and a hooker muffler intalled. My wife is hearing impaired so the PSD was not considered because she has trouble enough hearing when we are parking the 5th wheel besides I just couldn't warrant the extra $4000.00 when I only drive the truck about 12,000 miles a year pulling the trailer.

got a v-10 and love it!
i drove them both the diesel and the gasser and as i dont pull anything elected to go with the gasser.
For the following reasons.
1 runs like a bat out of hell!
2 I dont need the deisel cause i never haul anything and dont want to deal with the extra cost of oil changes and such.
3I never keep a truck past 5-6 years nd had to wieght the extra cost for the deisel.
The PSD Is a great engine and If I was pulling I would have bought one.
But bieg as I bought the truck for 4 wheeling and empty city driving I will stick with the gasser.
Just my two cents.
Ps I would like to see the -10 in a 1/2 ton truck with a blower LOL talk about a lightning killer!!!!

Thanks for the info! One dealer has a true blue one with the 3:73 gears and another dealer has a red one with 4:30 gears. I really wanted a red one but I want the 3:73 gears for the 2 mpg better gas mileage and I don't want to wait to order one so what to do what to do. I talked to a guy on the job today that has a new CC with the 3:73 gears and he is only getting 12 mpg! I am hoping for 14-15 empty on the road at 70 mph???

I get 13-15 on the road with my truck(see sig.), but am limited to about 72-mph before the mileage goes in the gutter....in town...mostly 9-10...short trips and heavy foot!!

Don't let all the posts about engine replacement scare you. My company V-10 has 127,000 miles on it, 5000 mile oil changes, drive it like its stolen. Not the power of a chipped PSD, better than 460 by far, get 10.5 mpg with 1,000 lbs. in truck & 4,000 two axle trailer in tow in the metro. Would seriously think about a V-10 again as a personal truck. Have chipped PSD also.
Go drive one and then decide. Just remember to use the revs a little. You won't hurt it.
I have an E350 V10 van w/3.73LS. It flat out hauls. I think many who bash on the V10 either have not driven one, or are not used to engines that turn faster than 3000 RPM.
The numbers tell the story, stronger than the 460 in torque and HP, and better gas mileage. It just spins a little faster, which is what it was designed to do.
I think once you are used to the power dilivery of the V10, you might start thinking the 460 had ok power on the bottom, but runs out of steam on top.
Iweb,
I have a V-10 with 3.73LS and you will get between 14-15 on the highway at 70. My day to day driving I get 12.5-13.5 with very little city driving. Since the weather has gotton colder mileage has dropped .5 mpg. I would probalby get the 3.73's unless doing a lot of heavy towing. Even though I am going back to a PSD I like the V10 but after pulling a trailer with a PSD I became spoiled. I know the diesel is more expensive to run and cost more option wise but like the low end power of the engine. Plus personally at highway speeds with my trailer on the back Aprox. #7200 it goes into overdrive and very rarely comes out. The V10 is constantly coming out of overdrive and is noiseier than the PSD with the high reving all the time. Not starting a diesel/gas war here just my personal experience with both. Steve
iweb: go for the 4.3!! try driving both, if you haven't already, and hit the throttle hard and maybe that'll convince you
c'mon.. is 2 mpg worth it?? ok, maybe yes..
but still..
