Hey Guy
No offense, but you obviously don't know much about diesel or gas engines. I think you have seen diesels running 4" and 5", which need large free flowing exhaust because of heat buildup due to turbo and high fuel volumes being burnt. If you install a 4 or 5 inch exhaust on your V10, I gaurantee you that your truck will sound like a drag car. The reason the diesels don't is because the turbo muffles much of the sound (I think). IMHO you should stick with the stock exhaust or at the very most a mild upgrade. The stock exhaust on a v10 looks to be about 2.5 inches. I wouldn't go over that.

So Bully, how come the diesels get so much better mpg's. Since you mentioned diesels in the same sentence..did you mean "higher volumes being burnt than gas engines"? Sounded like it. Is it because diesels produce more torque? Because a diesel is a diesel? Because a diesel not a gas engine. Obviously I don't know(hint)...that's why I'm asking(no flame needed...just asking, please don't take offence...please...pretty please).
cack999,
welcome to the site, you'll find a lot of information here. You have 4 options here, wait for a better response, post your message in the gas engine section, do as bully says, put a 4" - 5" pipe on your v-10 with a turbo to muffle the sound. Oh and keep your foot in it all the time to keep the "high fuel volumes" as high as possible.
Or put some type of "flowmaster" 1 in and 2 out after the cat. The sound will not be like a v-8, actually more like a pumped v-6. The sound varies so much I've heard some folks change out the various types you mentioned looking for a better sound. Either way it sounds better than the stock system. Power? who knows...it sounds faster.
robsd,
I think he meant to say that 4-5" is necessary because the diesels have to pump out large volumes of soot.
cack999,
I believe the Banks system is 3.5", which is plenty for a 6.8L gas engine. Search for posts by wawii, he has this system on his V10. Keep in mind that with a larger, free flowing exhaust, you will dramatically change the torque curve, and may lose 40-50 ft.lbs. at lower rpms. Top end horsepower will be increased, though. Also, in all fairness to the ford-diesel site, we really aren't supposed to be discussing Gas Engines in this forum.

The Flowmasters sound very tinny, I went with the Magnaflow. Make sure you do your homework and listen to a couple of different type systems they do NOT have the V-8 rumble. You might be dissapointed in the sound after having spent all that money, also you will not have any noticable power increase

...I went with BORLA for my V-10, duals out the back which I think is 3"...and it is quite until you step on the gas. Like others have noted, the V-10 does NOT have the resonance that a V-8 does, kind of sounds like a VIPER, if you have had the pleasure of listening to one. I got the BORLA mainly for the quality and warranty. Most of my trips are short ones and with the ILL. winters, you can eat up an exhaust system fast. The BORLA has a lifetime warranty, so if anything rusts, it gets fixed. Took my local exhaust man about 45-minutes to lift truck, remove old exhaust(1/2 hour of that time), put new exhaust on, lower truck. The connecting pipe between muffler and cat converter is re-used with the BORLA and is a job to get off without destroying the pipe. Overall, I am VERY satisfied with the sound and quality of the product. It is a bit pricey, but for me the warranty is worth it because I plan to keep truck awhile....

I want to replace my V10 Excursion exhaust to get more power and make it sound better/meaner louder. Any suggestions? Should I get a whole system or just purchase a Flowmaster 3 chamber 1 in 2 out and get it piped? Should I get 4" or 5"? Aluminum or stainless piping? Is flowmaster better than borla, gibson, dynomax etc..
Thanks for the replies. I think I'll check out Borla. How much was it? I want to go 1 in 2 out, is that available? I also don't like the borla tips (too small) so I'll probably put my own big tip.
I have a Borla on my supercharged mr2 so I just wanted to try the flows since everyone has been putting these on their full size trucks.
if you can, change the Y-pipe as well (custom or aftermarket; usually comes with headers like JBA's, but you may be able to get them seperately). the stock y-pipe is really restrictive..
i have 3" stainless duals (4" echo tips) dual magnaflow mufflers with a straightened y-pipe and that combo makes for a definite increase in power (especially ~3000+ rpms) and loud aggressive sound (sometimes a little too loud, regretfully..)
truckperformance and RV Performance Center are both located in CA. Call them both and they will beat each others deals. You may be able to get a bargain.

Look at www.borla.com for systems for your Excursion and use those part numbers to get prices.

Just put a flowmaster 1 in 2 out 3 chamber on my v10. Sounds great. Medium sound on acceleration cannot hear it or notice it too much on freeway at steady speed. Feel more power/pull when gassing. $350 with 2 stainless steel tips installed.
Thanks for the help! Just need the K&N Gen2 system now. Has anyone tried that yet? Is it avaliable? Easy to install?
Thanks for the correction Ricky, thought they did.
BTW, I ended going with Kenne Bell.. i know, i know, you're all vortech but sorry, i couldn't wait any longer to decide. still performs fantastic though
FYI: JBA does not currently offer a Y-pipe with or for their header kits for the V10.
Magnaflow makes some real nice stainless stuff. www.magnaflow.com
Ricky.
kevin, it's awesome! fries tires like you wouldn't believe
as far as doing it again.. well, to be honest, i'd rather like to have the chance to really compare it to other ones like vortech and paxton by driving them and see all the options (boost, intercooler, chip prog, mods)
and performance.
