I think it's a bit annoying that Ford does not offer 3.55 gears with the V10.
Is it even possible to special-order? I would expect much better mileage ratings that it currently gets with 3.73s. Has anyone even considered (gasp) changing over aftermarket?
Thanks.

I think "work" capacity took precedence over economy in the SD line of trucks... especially with the V10. Thus, gears higher than 3.73 aren't offered as an option.
The aftermarket industy builds some tremendous stuff. I've not seen any 3.55 ratio gears, though. Mostly, they seem to be building lower 4.56 ratios. Hopefully, they have more- I just haven't seen them.
If it makes you feel better, you can always compare mileage with me. Right now, with a lot of idling and running in 4WD, I'm getting around 9mpg. No complaints though.
Granted, they are work trucks first, however, 3.55 gears are offered with the diesel. This is one of the decisions that really has me stumped -- for that very reason, I'm leaning toward the diesel, for both power and better fuel economy over the long haul. But if I could get 3.55s with the V10, that expected mileage improvement might just sway me enough. I don't need or want 3.73 gears or lower. I'm tired of getting 12mpg!

Are you sure you can still get 3.55's with the PSD? I've never seen it listed anywhere since the Super Duty came out. I thought 3.73's was as low as they went anymore. Then 4.10's and 4.30's and don't the F-450 & 550 offer 5.13's? I actually wish I could have gotten something around 3.23's on my '96. I wanted to run 72 mph at 1800 rpm., right now I'm 68 mph at 2000 with 3.55's.
Just a note. I replaced the gears on my former PSD. I went from the stock 3:73 to 4:56. They take the gears from a 12.25 rear-end(old style ford truck). and then by using a shaved(for lack of a better word) pinion gear to fit the new 10.50 rear-ends found in the latest body style. The truck has since gone down the road and my new toy is hear.

Thanks... just wondering if something like that could be "special ordered" from Ford, or if I'm just on my own. I expect it would be $1000 or so (?) to have gears changed aftermarket... of course, with a Detroit Locker or something.

I think you could get 3.08's in Econoline's back in the 80's & early 90's too. Nothing avail. even in aftermarket now. To many manufacturers of Overdrive gearboxes now.
There is only 5% difference going from 3.73 to a 3.55 Perhaps you could try a slightly larger tire....at least you could switch back if you wanted. personally, I doubt that anyone can even perceive a one size gear change.
