V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

I am burning 87 Octang. Does anybody's V10s knock when the engine is warm and driving a 2300 to 2500 RPM?

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

It sounds like you may be experiencing the exhaust "flutter" that many of us V10 owners are experiencing. There are many threads regarding this noise throughout this forum. It is due to a badly designed Y-Pipe.

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

Thank you for the reply, but that is not my problem.

It is a knock/ping, like the timing is retard or low octane.

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

I would have also said flutter. You usually don't hear a gas knock with that high rpm unless the timing is way out.

Hmmmm..

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

It "shouldn't" ping on 87, but I think mine does a little too. Run a tank of 91+ octane and see if the ping goes away. If it does, take it back to the dealer for diagnosis.

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

I'm no mechanic, but in my experience a knocking from low octane gas usually occurs at much lower RPM levels. Like some of the others have said, I would tend to lean more towards timing or something else. Good luck.

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

When the engine starts to knock, do you feel any reduction in power from the engine? If it is engine "ping" (detonation) and it is that loud you will feel a power loss. If no power loss I would tend to believe it is not "ping" or a timing problem. Good Luck

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

With certain brands of gas, mine will knock in that RPM range when I press down the gas pedal fast, but only for a half-second until the knock sensor kicks in. I always burn regular 87 octane. Texaco gas does this, and chevron does not.

On my 2000 SD, the wire for the knock sensor is routed from near the front of the engine, under the intake manifold and then to a disconnect plug at the top back of the engine. Check to make that plug has not come loose.

These engines can knock at any RPM if the computer and sensors are not working correctly.

Good luck!

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

My V-10 knocked for the first time a few weeks ago on a cold day, climbing a steep hill. My guess was summer grade gas couldn't handle the 15 degree weather or I just got a bad load of fuel. Ran the tank dry and refilled and haven't heard a knock since.

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

Guys, you probably don't have CA emissions.
The knock sensors work well. The computer is set for 87 octane. You may have flutter, especially in 2000 to 3000 rpm range. Pay attention folks. "Flutter" is a real thing.
Is it exhaust noise? Piston slap? I don't know, but the noise sucks, doesn't it?! Do you like taking friends for a ride to share the excitement of Super Duty Truck ownership... And then have them notice the noise and ask... What the hell is that noise????????????????????????????????????

Re: V10 Knocking 2300 to 2500 RPM

I definitely have some pre/post-detonation which I describe in the "Knocking confirmed; not flutter" topic. basically through use of a computer to monitor the spark timing.
