NO

But then again neither will the truck

I think 200,000+ is not an unreasonnable expectation in a well cared for gasser. My friend has over 200+gs on his 350 C***y and it hardly burns any oil.

Re: V10 Longevity

C'Mon, the wife's got a '91 305 Caprice w/260,000 on it - goin' strong; I got an '83 Chevy van w/315,000 before it croaked. Surely the newer gas motors can do better?!?!

Re: V10 Longevity

The reasoning it seems like you're using is kind of flawed. It doesn't make sense to say that because you have two gas-powered vehicles with high mileage on them that any newer vehicle (also gas-engined) will be able to exceed those mileage figures. I'm not picking on you personally, but I see this a lot where people say "If X happens, and then Y happens later, then X must have caused Y since X happend first." Re: V10 Longevity

We rented a Cruise America E-450 30 foot motorhome with the V-10 last year for vacation. It was a '99 model so it had the lesser horsepower V-10 with auto xmission. We picked it up in Salt Lake City and drove it back to Atlanta, visiting every place in between (it seemed like). We put over 3,000 miles on it. We went through every kind of weather and terrain imaginable. From sand storms to snow storms. We drove through the mountains of Colorado climbing to over 12,000 feet. The on-board generator wouldn't even start at that altitude but the motor ran just as strong as ever. The only thing that I would change on this line of vehicles (pickups, vans, everything) is to put a auto-xmission with an additional gear in it. The auto xmission it has now makes the engine work harder than it needs to, especially in the mountains. It makes it wind out too much before it shifts. Another gear would take advantage of the torque that's available sooner. That has to especially true in the diesel. That's probably why most folks that tow heavy all the time like the manual xmissions. Shift it when you want to. As far as the engine lasting, that usually boils down to preventative maintenance.

V10 Longevity

Anybody worn one of these beasties out yet??

I drove an E350 28' motorhome to Fl. in 2000 - Pulled like a freight train, got 10 MPG runnin' 75mph, (caught Dad runnin' it 85mph through Atlanta on the way back around midnight!) passed every diesel anything on the road, and ran the generator out of the same tank.

Needless to say I was MUCH impressed. I want to buy a 2000 X w/V10 but I'm concerned about the potential longevity of these motors. Think they will go 350,000???

Re: V10 Longevity

Hi MtFly,

Don't worry about pickin' on me - got a hide like a rhino!

I made the assumption, based on what I have read about the ford engine plants, that recent deisgn motors manufactured under 'modern' statistical quality control systems would outlast 1950's design chevy smallblocks (light duty at that).
Tell me I ain't wrong, please.

Here's hopin' anyway because the wife and I just went and closed a deal for a 2000 V10 Xcar Limited 4X4 tonight.

Re: V10 Longevity

Hi JACIII

Last year I rode in a 1997 F-150 with the 5.4 V-8 that was used for hotshotting small oilfield parts in South Louisiana. The truck had 328,000 highway miles with 7,000 mile oil and filter changes using shell dino oil. It ran perfect. His only mech problem was the right rear axle went out at 181,000 miles. He had never changed the rear end oil.

Since the V-10 is just a 5.4 with two cylinders added I would think this would apply to your question.

I would say that the only variable is that this truck was not used for any pulling and hardly any in town driving. But I still think it speaks well for the modular motors.

Re: V10 Longevity

I just rebuild the engine at every oil change. You know they won't last.
