V10 mountain towing report

Lake Powell and back, 1100 miles round trip.

The V10 performed well enough and displayed adequate strength to pull the 5000# boat/ trailer with 4 passengers and 1000# of freight in the bed.

On the 'flats' beyond Glenwood, cruise control was set at 75, with OD off.

On Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel (10k ft.), 55 mph in second, 3300 rpm. I really had to watch the tach on downshifts though, as the engine was apt to jump close to the trany's 4600 rpm 'auto-destruct' zone.

Average fuel (87 or 88 octane) economy was 10 mpg; very good for this load and altitude, IMHO.

Spoon

Sounds like a great trip. Don't you just love Powell? Been there many times and I can't get enough. One of these times we're gonna get a houseboat and stay a while.

Re: V10 mountain towing report

spoon,

Sounds like you're the guy I need to talk to. I am going to order the same truck you have soon but I am a little hesitant to get the 3.73 gear. I do a lot of driving in Colorado, about half the time I am towing 6000lbs, and I would like to know several things before I buy.
1. Did you have a chance to drive the same truck with the 4.3 gear? If so, what were any likes/dislikes about it?
2. Does the higher elevation/thinner air really rob that much power from the engine or do you even notice this? Or is the V10-3.73 combo more than enough for this type of driving?
3. What kind of fuel milage are you getting w/o towing?
Thanks for any help.
Dan

Re: V10 mountain towing report

I had a '00 that was identical to my current ride except it was equipped with 4.3 gears.
This time, I opted for the 3.73 for the following reasons:

1. I only tow in the summer.
2. The 4.3s would shift the trans about 20' from a dead stop, way too soon.
3. In winter, I would spin the rear tires on ice/snow unless I used a feather touch on the accelerator.
4. Gas mileage was 9-11 mpg with the 4.3's.
5. I put 30k miles per year on my truck (see #4)

I notice a decrease in performance climbing at about 9-10,000 ft, but if I keep the revs in the 'sweet-spot' of 2800-3500 rpms, I don't lose much headway (see my first post).

Current mileage is about 13 mpg around town at 5000-6000 ft. altitude, 10-11 mpg towing. In the high country: 11 with no load, 9 towing.

V10 Rocks,

Your mileage doesn't sound bad at all. I hope I get that good! Truck due in next week.

One question though. What tire pressure are you running and what brand/size tires? Have you changed the stock tires?

I want to make sure I run the most efficient tire pressure since I'm going to have to use the truck to commute about 60 flat, freeway, cruise-control, miles per day.

I don't typically drive as fast as you; I stay under 65 on my commute. If I can get the 16 mph that you're getting, that will be better than my '95 5.8L which was getting about 15 mpg on commute.

Thanks,

steve
