Does anyone elses' V10 ping on 87 octane fuel? Mine will only stop pinging with 89 octane or higher. Granted the gas in CA is pretty crappy, it still should run on 87.
No pinging what so ever here, these V-10's were designed to run on the low grade (87 octane) gas. Maybe the green heads in California decided to sneak another anti-polution chemical into your fuels? I noticed my Ranger did that when I lived in Cali... I think its the MTBE they add. If your ever out of state or near a lake that sells gas without MTBE try it and see if it stops, mine did as soon as I moved back to Missouri.
Mine was doing that on 87. I brought it to the attention of my dealer and they reprogrammed the computer. They upgraded the software and reset it. I was skeptical but it doesn't ping at all and gets the same MPG as it did before.

It's a 99 crewcab 4x4 LB. I had the flutter thing checked out and got the super cheap-ass ford fix...the dumbbell hanging off the exhaust, it worked. It sure does sound like a ping to me. I bought one of these Superchip programmers and before I used it I called the manuf and came to the conclusion that the previous owner may have installed this piece of crap on my truck. I went to the dealer and had him reprogram the computer (in like december), it helped a whole bunch and stopped pinging on 89 (which is what I usually ran, 2 out of 3 times) but since the gas hikes I've been running 87 (It was $2.30/gal for a while in CA). Before the re-programing it wouldn't stop pinging on anything (87, 89, 92, booster, injector cleaner, different exhaust...I tried it all). But now it pings quite a bit more on 87 than usual. Since the gas hikes it seems like the gas just went to hell, hopefully it isn't my truck.
Anyone have any expertise knowledge on programming the brain, could it take a few times to get it to stick (some fuzzy logic in there or something)?
My truck started pinging on mid grade so I went to super and it almost cured it. It ping's occasionally right before it upshifts now. Gas is coming down bigtime here in Austin. Super is at $1.33 a gal! And diesel is still at $1.65 I think i'm going to try and get the computer re-flashed and see if that fixes it..

Are you sure of this? I also live in TX and around these parts, diesel and 87 unlead trade places for which is cheapest. Worst case, diesel is as high as the mid grade unleaded. I've never seen it as high as Super, which is usually 0.20 higher than 87 octane.
If super is $1.33, the I'm guessing that 87 is around $1.10. I've not seen super that low or diesel that high in recent history.
Post a picture of the pump prices and I'll buy you dinner.

yeah, make a friend at the dealer cuz some of those clowns want $200 for 5 minutes of standing there with a wire attached under your dash.
I called the service dept. at Covert Ford today, he said 78 bucks to diagnose then he'll let me know what it'll cost to fix..btw they want $300.00 to change the plugs!!
BobR:I'll take you up on that offer! Do I get to choose where?
Mines never pinged,(knock on wood)it seems like this truck will run on water,I had a ranger that pinged like crazy but not on high test. This thing would be painful to fill up on high test.Hopefully you get it figured out.
I get occassional engine ping with my V10, but only in those rare moments when I'm on a hill at low-rpm, and not giving it enough gas so it downshifts. I've got 90K on my V10 with 95% of those miles on 87, and the rest with 89 which I use when I tow a heavy load. The engine flutter on the '99s and '00s sounds extremely similar to engine ping. I put the '01 Y-pipe on mine to get rid of da flutta.
