Re: V10 Pinging on 87

Ok I finally think I have the solution to the pinging. I got a check engine light the other day and had the code read. EGR valve! Go figure. Is it best to just replace it, the guy at Autozone said to shoot some carb cleaner in the hose while its running and then reset the computer... [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif[/img]

This seems to me like it would cause a complete failure of the EGR valve. If you "shoot some carb cleaner in the hose" all you are doing is burning a hole in the diaphram.

You need to be more specific on your diagnosis. There are several EGR related codes. Might not be the valve at all but a sensor.

Re: V10 Pinging on 87

It was a "blocked egr flow" code.

Re: V10 Pinging on 87

I can only assume it means blocked exhaust flow. Shooting carb cleaner in the hose isn't going to fix that, since you would be "cleaning" the vacuum diaphram, not the valve itself. To clean the valve, you must remove it and use a wire brush. As long as you are getting a vacuum signal at your valve, you probably should just replace the valve.

Re: V10 Pinging on 87

Are you sure you didn't get this code:

P1406 - Diff Pres Feedback Sens Downstream Hose Off/Plugged

I just got that one a few weeks ago, after I installed the superchip tuner, and couldn't see any hose not plugged in. I don't really know which one is up or down, but they both looked ok, so I reset the code and it hasn't come back for a couple weeks so far.

What's the final verdict on the egr valve?

Re: V10 Pinging on 87

The code was a P0401 No EGR flow. The DPFE sensor was bad. $228.00 to fix. So far no pinging on mid grade. I'm going to try a little bit of regular unleaded tomorrow and see if its cured...

Re: V10 Pinging on 87

That did it. The truck runs fine on regular unleaded now!
