Yea I know its been asked a million times but I need some help. I can afford to buy either a PSD SC or a V10 CC. I want the CC but I fear the people that say the V10 only gets 10 mpg and is a dog with less power than the old 460. I know some say different but whats your opinion? Thanks.

Iweb,
I have had both and it depends on what you want or what you will use it for. I had a 95 PSD that pulled my enclosed car trailer great. I bought a 2000 V10 and it did not do as good a job as the PSD so I have a 2001 PSD on order. The 2000 V10 gets 12.5-13.3 everday driving for me. My 95 got 16.5-18 doing the same driving. The 2001 will get a little less than the 95 I am guessing.
So I would get what you want and are happy with. Steve

This is a loaded question! I bought the V-10 after I figured costs, maintenance, miles driven, plus other things. The mileage is better than I expected, high of 14.5 mpg hwy., less around town. The best answer is to do the math and figure out your uses and go from there. BTW, I do not think that the V-10 is lacking power by any means. YMMV SamC
I bought the V10 because I only keep a truck about two years, and don't think the extra 4K was worthit to me.I tow a 11k lb fiver with my 01 350 CC4x4, and I am VERY happy with the power.I think if you keep it a long time, the diesel may pay off.To each their own, good luck with your decision.

Those were my two choices as well!! I went with the V-10 CC and I don't regret it a bit.
Having the extra room is great. The V-10 does not get great milage, but then again, its moving a 7000# truck down the road (with ample power to spare)
We've had 4 (it'll be 5 today, my wife is picking up her '01 F350 PSD) PSD's, we've still got two ('97 F350 CC/4WD and '01 F350 CC/4WD). I went down to the dealership a few weeks ago intending to buy another PSD, he'd called and said they have 4 on the lot I should take a look at. Got there and got talked into trying a V10. I drove it less than 3 miles and was hooked. NO NOISE, excellent power. I bought it. We'll still use the PSD's for towing, and my wife mentioned driving the V10 isn't easy. She can't get used to that instant power. I belive if you run the numbers, you'll find the PSD pays for itself after 80k miles. If you're keeping the truck forever - and don't mind the racket they make - get a PSD. They hold their value well, our '97 has less than 40k miles on it and the dealer really wanted it - we kept it.
I love my V10. I have a PSD we use for work at my shop. Its good too but less refined for non work type situations. If you get a V10 CHECK FOR FLUTTER FIRST!!!

I love my V10 SD as it's my snappy commuter vehicle - has oodles of power. I only haul a$$ to the beach on weekends - 2600RPM with 36" tires = low flying. Wife hates the diesel smell and noise. I got to spend the $4k on aftermarket toys. Also less worry about an extra 600lbs of PSD sagging my front springs, blowing out a large C-rated tire or sinking the SD nose first in sand/mud. Take a test drive thru a drivethru in a PSD - you have to switch it off to order, collect and pay.
If you tow or haul anything substantial get the PSD. I went from 11-12mpg to 8-9mpg after the lift (all heavy foot with a/c on), so if you plan to keep it longer than 100,000 miles ( supposedly the engine cost vs extra mpg breakeven point) you should get the PSD. Resale on a PSD is better so that is something to consider too. Heck, if you just like/want the PSD then get it, you can always trade it in next year if you don't like it, and if you order for invoice plus X you can probably sell it for MSRP less Y.
Remember, you only live once!
Hope this helps! Keith.

When you run the numbers, dont forget to allow for the interest earned by the money in the bank. Assuming 13mpg for the V10 and 18mpg for the PSD and 15,000 miles per year, it took well over 10 years for the PSD to pay off. I didn't allow for a higher resale because I run my trucks until they're worn out and practicaly worthless anyway.

Was in the same boat. Didn't really want to shell out the extra $$ for a PSD but like the longevity, power, towing capability. Wife didn't want the noise/smell. Saw a CC Lariat on the lot. Had a PSD. I was on a business trip so the wife test drove it, haggled, and bought it that afternoon. I'm happy as all get out with the PSD. Yeah, it was more than I wanted to spend, but I plan to keep this rig for 150k plus. What the heck, you can't take your money with you!

They are both great engines. I would buy a PSD if I put a lot of miles on my truck or if I was towing a heavy load or driving at high elevation or just if I wanted to stroke my ego by saying I have a real truck engine.
For me personally, the V10 with 4.30 gears hauls my 4000 lb slide-in just fine. I love the neck snapping acceleration off the line. My fuel is cheaper and maintenance costs lower. I figure 100,000 miles to break even on the extra $4000 for the PSD. The break even would be even longer (or never) if I took the $4000 I saved and invested it instead.
It really depends on your situation whether the PSD makes sense. Of course, who says things always have to make sense?
You could end up with a PSD that cackles or a V10 that flutters. I've had a early 99 V10 and now a 2000 V10 and haven't noticed any objectionable exhaust noises (flutter)in either. The 99 did sound like marbles spinning around when it shifted cold due to a possible torque converter problem. It's gone, so I don't know what that was. The 2000 has no problems.
It seems like everything has been covered, but I would like to chime in on the V-10 vs the 460. I have pulled my 5,000 - 6,000 lb travel trailer with a 88 f-250 with a 460 and my 2001 V-10 and I far prefer the V-10 in power and gas mileage. In addition I am getting 14-16 mpg highway unloaded if I drive 65. The V-10 is also a new generation motor with an overhead cam which in the long run should increase engine life. When I made my decision I spoke with a friend with a 99 psd and he was only getting 15 mpg under the best highway conditions. I know others get better, but if you add 20 cents a gallon more for diesel to that equation it's hard to make up 4,300$..
