Another thing I have been wondering about. I thought that the V10 was supposed to be a higher revving motor than the old 460. I had one 460 that turned 4300 and another that turned 4600. My V10 only turns 4600. Don't seen to be much higher revving to me. This test was done with automatic trans. and shifter in drive with foot to floor. Mine seems to miss a little at full throtle at about 4000 RPM. Anyone else checked this out?
What's a "safe" rpm for these engines, anyways? Mine has no redline on the tach.
Also, does anybody else's truck have a govenor on it? My truck simply stops accelerating at 95 mph and doesn't do anything if you push the pedal to the floor...no stutter, no downshift, no nothing...just stops accelerating at a bit past 95 then settles back at 95 and stays there. Plently of RPM and power left, just stops at 95. I guess that's a "good" thing, but it would be interesting to know what it really does. True, the speedo only reads 100, but a good GPS unit will tell you how fast you are going wihtin about 3-5 miles per hour. (GPS will read slightly slower than true speed)
I'm at 5300... a few more than my '00 F150 w/5.4L would turn!
If they are like the F150s, SDs have both speed and rev limiters. The speed limiter is set according to the speed rating of the tires. Aftermarket chips can remove this if you desire.
I don't know the rev limit- I'd guess around 6000 rpm. Looking at the HP & Torque curves, it doesn't matter. The engine peters out even before the 5300 shift point is reached.
