V10 vs. 460 no psds

Just started shopping for small motorhome. (used). It seems most have the V 10. Some older ones have the 460. is the 460 got more power but way less mpg. Also don.t see any with the 7.3 psd. Anyone know why? I love the 7.3in my F 350. (my 7th one since 88. Any help here ? Merry Christmas to all.

Re: V10 vs. 460 no psds

The V10 is the replacement for the 460. It has more Hp and TQ, and is more fuel efficient than the 460. RVs use the V10 because it is something like 600 pounds lighter than the PSD, and has nearly the same power specs. Most RVs are already too heavy, and need the additional payload capacity.

Re: V10 vs. 460 no psds

Moonyun,
I've owned both the 460 & V10. I do think the 460 is a better motorhome engine, but the V10 is a better pickup motor. The 460 has a better low end delivery for such a heavy vehicle. The V10 is more of a rev engine. My 460 got 8 mpg no matter what the driving and the V10 does 11-14 city/highway, quite a difference. Two friends have the V10 in their motor homes with no complaints

My dad has a 36 foot self contained motorhome with a V-10 in it. Seems to have enough power and gets 8 mpg all day long.

Moonyun, we're always hearing from the oily guys that the PSD lasts a long time. What's up with owning 7 in the last 13 years?!

Re: V10 vs. 460 no psds

I do know for a fact the 460 is a gas hog because my 88 F-450 loves to guzzle it fast and the top mpg is 6 empty. I'am looking for diesel as I'am tired of leaving half of my paycheck to the local gas station every month. I used to believe in gas power but not anymore its not worth it especially if the truck is your Work/Personal use driven daily.

Oh ya my Tare weight on my truck is 8200 lbs (what the truck weighs empty).

Re: V10 vs. 460 no psds

The real reason for no PSD in motorhomes, is that no one wants to pay the extra money for somthing that stays parked most of the time. You can order one with a PSD though.

Re: V10 vs. 460 no psds

I like my 460 better, but the reason I like my 460 better probably wouldn't appeal to you as much. The reason I like my 460 so much is - POTENTIAL. With a good exhaust system the 460 will outperform the v10 considerably in lower RPMs and hang well with it in upper RPMs. Also, if you want to get really radical, big cubes are possible with the 460. The stock block can be bored and stroked to 552 CID. Aftermarket blocks can go to 800+ CID. I have driven a V10 also however and feel that they certainly perform acceptably.

I tell you this
the 460's in a motorhome have no resale
so they might be the best bargin to be had
