I can only speak from my experience, but I had a 1997 7.3 and a 2002 7.3, both diesels and they both did me a great job on towing. We had a big 3 axle 5th wheel and the diesels handled it with no problem. We sold the 5th wheel and the 2002 7.3, and then I ordered this 2008 V-10 with a 4.10 rear. I have towed heavy a few times but not as heavy as a giant 5th wheel. The V-10 will haul everything but the heaviest situations and even then, if you go with a 4.33 or 4.56 rear, you will have no problems. I haul large boats, trailers with snowmobiles, 4-wheelers, etc and no grunting at all. The new torqueshift tranny with tow/haul really makes the difference. I would not go back to a diesel at this point. I love the "gas and go" and the wife likes the gas fillup vs the diesel smell. Get a new V-10 and never look back.

I haven't owned a Dodge, but looking at towing tests, performance of the 3V V10 should be on par or a bit better than any pre-"600" Cummins. I've pulled up to 11.5K in my 2005 3V V10 4.10 and not had any performance complaints. Yes, it will rev to make max power, like any engine needs to do, just depends on where the power band is. With that 11.5K load the V10 pulls hills great in the 3-5K RPM range and can lope along on the flats in OD if you keep it to 70.

As far as the driveability goes, like Pappy19 said, it's great. I bought a V10 over a diesel because I hardly use my truck (2-5K miles/year) so I didn't want a larger cost engine just sitting there and I didn't want to suffer any more maladies due to the less use I was giving it. Diesel, and esp the 6.0, seem to suffer from this. Ford even had a bulletin to the service body builders asking them to go around and start up every 6.0 sitting on their back lots awaiting applications every month to avoid problems.

You might check this test out, and while it's comparing the 2008 diesels and gas so I know it's not exactly what you're trying to find out, it's unbiased and objective:

Good luck.
