Question V10 worth it???

Im in the market for a slightly used or new 6.8 V10...Is it worth it??? I drive about 15-17K miles a year and im getting 14-17 mpg in my 6.0 but the $80 oil changes...I really dont tow that much but I haul alot of stuff in my bed. Im just looking for advice because ive never had a gasser before and I dont want to regret buying one.

Instead of $80 oil changes every 5-7000 miles, look at the By-Pass Oil Filter Setup from Amsoil and swith to a synthetic Diesel Oil. Either Amsoil, Rotela or Mobil 1. With the By-pass Filtration system it will filter 100% of your oil down to 1 micron ever 4-5 minutes. This along with synthetic will prolong your engine oil life to 20,000 or even more miles. Amsoil will also analyze your oil at intervals to let you know if it needs to be changed or not. I know of some people that use this setup and have over 40,000 on a since oil change. Initial setup and expense of synthic oil will run about $550, but the cost outweights itself by less frequent changes.

If you want more information on this, let me know and I will point you in the right direction and supply a powerstroke professionals personal testimony...

You can buy Motorcraft oil and filters at Wal-Mart for under $50.00 and do it yourself...I don't think you'll be pleased with the V-10's mileage.

If you think about how many V-10's were put into Class C and up motorhomes, it would boggle the mind. Your porblem will be finding a used V-10 pickup for sale. The V-10 engines made before 2005 had an issue with the spark plugs sometimes blowing out due to the high compression and high rev's. They fixed that issue by making deeper threads for the spark plugs. Also, in 2006, they uped the HP to 365, and along with the Torqueshift tranny, is one heck of a combo. My 2008 mileage is around 11.5 around town, 12 on the highway and no lower than 9 towing a 4 place trailer with ATV's or snowmobiles. Nicest part of a V-10 gasser is just that; $14.95 oil changes and gas/go, no worries.

Your current mileage is better than what you will see with the V-10, however unleaded remains might-near $1.00 per gallon cheaper. V-10 oil changes are less, but what I didn't care for was those over priced diesel fuel filters, just plain expensive.
You didn't say how much or how often you tow, but I know my 06 V-10 pulls a 32' trailer loaded with 10 bale rolls of hay with ease.
They are pretty much Gas N Go trucks

I really don't tow that much a 16' cattle trailer to east texas couple times a year...but I load my bed all the time hay, feed, wood, pipe, ect. I love my diesel but im ready for a V10 from the way ya'll talk about it sounds like a great motor "fords best kept secret" also I can buy a crap load of gas for the price of the diesel...not to mention the keep up...I think I would feel funny driving a superduty with a gasser thats why ive never gotten one.

Engines are never to old to run synthetic oil. But you will need to run a cleaner thought it in the existing oil before draining and installing synthetic. No big deal though. If you do not have an Pyrometer guage, install one to monitor your exhaust gas temp and that will help you prevent a blown head gasket and give you early warning on an EGR valve problem.

I have not driven a V-10, so I cannot speak of power differences, or towing drivability, but I know that they use more fuel. It is cheaper to buy unleaded vs diesel, but I do wish I had 2 diesel trucks rather than this 6.0 Chevy Gas Gussler that I have. Love the Powerstroke so much more.

I understand the Superduty and diesel connection. I have had the 6.9, a few of the 7.3, one 6.0 which was in an 03 F-450 4x4 Lariat, and now I also have a 6.4 PSD, the one in my avatar. It was such a good buy at 30K off sticker I jumped at it like a frog to a fly. However, there ain't much other than pulling my 40' Travel Supeme triple slide 5th wheel that my V-10 can't do for me. It pull my trailer full of Longhorn, trailers full of hay, and my 14' dump trailer full of dirt, soil, Texas clay, or gravel like a dream. All she ever ask for is gas and more gas, a $15 to $20 dollar oil change every 5,000 miles or so. It did take some getting used to jumping in a Superduty, turning the key and not hearing the noise of a diesel...on the other hand....it is nice to hear nothing sometimes. The manual trannie is nice to tow through the gears and allows for good driver control of the RPM's. The V-10 can put a BSEG on your face real fast.
And as for the "Ford's Best Kept Secret" Let me know when/if you buy your V-10 and I'll forward you a hat just let me know what style you want.
Have a great day!

Maybe Im the only one with a bad experience with them but I wouldnt own one if you give it to me. They suck gas, no torque and sound like a sick six banger when you add aftermarket exhaust. Im probly going to get flamed for this but I have to speak my mind. I had one in a company truck with all maint. and upkeep performed reg. and with a little over 100k the engine locked up. The brand spanking new engine from ford was just as much lazy as the first. I want to say it was an 05 but im not sure. Ohh when we pulled our 10' utility trailer with appx 3000lbs of metal it felt like you was pulling a 35' trailer loaded with 20k lbs of brick. I hated that truck and I wouldnt own one, that truck left a bad taste in my mouth.

My two pennies: I bought my V10 right before the current economical crash. When diesel was cheaper than 91. Gas hit 5.49 per gallon in my town and diesel topped out at 5.99 per gallon. NO BULL****. I was laughing then fillin' er up and I'm laughing now. Yeah, sure, them diesel boys are getting 18-20mpg but I'm getting a mighty steady 12mpg on the highway (unloaded), 8-10mpg in town and towing and it only costs me 50 bucks to fill er up. Diesel is a steady 60-70 cents more per gallon than 89 in my area. Its a Super Cab with a shortbed and I threw a huge lift on er but I'm still laughing it up. I love my V10. Its realiable, gets the job done, has plenty of power stock and even more is at your fingerprints with mild mods, and sounds mean with a custom made catback. Its cheaper than its diesel counterpart in every aspect. It truly depends on what you need the truck for really. Like I said: My two cents
