V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

I may have a fix for the flutter and restrictive characteristics of the stock 99-00 and Ford's "interim" 2001 y-pipe. I'll post pics when I have the prototype aftermarket aluminized y-pipe in a couple of weeks. Projected cost is about $280.00.

Although I can't comment further until I see the finished product, I would appreciate some feed-back as to how many members of this forum would be interested in buying one of these pipes, should it come to market.

I'll put up a link for the source when I have tested the unit and I am comfortable recommending it.

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

If your y-pipe solution would fit my truck, and it resolves the flutter noise, I'd be interested. Note that I have a 5 spd V10 not an auto....if that makes any difference.

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

Remember the 99's and 00's have diferent pipe lengths to the cat so what fits a 99 won't fit the 00/01. I'm sure some of the problems Ford engineers have to deal with is the EPA. Good luck with your project. BTW, for $250 more you could get a Brola header kit.

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

V10 man: Thanks for the input on the 99/00 Vs. 01. Borlas web-site lists only headers for the '99
Q:
1. Does the Borla kit include a new Y-pipe?
(according to the info on their web-site, the price is for headers only).
2. Where can I see some pics?
3. Are we there yet?

Even as mechanically illiterate as I am, I would buy one and try to install it to get rid of those darn flutters! Thanks.

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

I would be interested. Although there is a new post from Ricky B stating that he got rid of the flutter with JBA "no EGR" headers and he figures the flutter is from the EGR.

Also, I've never seen any discussion on why people think Ford made that crazy pipe in the first place. It seems awfully easy to build a true Y-pipe and not a pretzel-pipe. I mean, just have the passenger side come straight down instead of doing that stupid turn around/half-gainer thing. Do you think Ford had problems making power or equalizing both sides of the engine? They seem to have gone through an awful lot of trouble making that pretzel-pipe an equal-length situation.
Heck, I don't know

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

The Borla kit includes the crossover pipe. check my post here: http://forums.ford-diesel.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=20&t=000488

After a month of use I can say that there has been power gains. Also looking at at least 1/2 mpg increase.

I did not have the flutter. It seems to me that the flutter started in 2000. I figured it is because of the mods Ford did to increase the power. Just a guess.
www.truckperformance.com list the Borla for 2000 but not 2001. There can't be much difference. You'd have to call Borla direct to find out I suppose.

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

v10 man, I read through both threads. In the first thread you indicated a 1/2mpg decrease, this one you said increase. The V10 has plenty of power for my needs, but a 1/2mpg increase means they'll pay for themselves on a new truck. I hate to be a pest but did mpg go up...or down??

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

John,

The first tank of gas was a 1/2 mpg decrease. My last 2 have been 1/2 increase. I beleive part of this is due to the "fun factor" of "testing" the headers. Now that I have settled down and the computer has adjusted it's self I've been getting the increase.

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

Thanks for the pics. That pipe is a big improvement from the standpoint of flow and aesthetics.

As is the case with even high-tech firms, Borla's web site lags behind in providing up-to-date data..

Re: V10 Y-pipe solution (?!)

Spoon,

Try calling them.. They have no dyno info...(or won't share it) and can only comment that the headers add 10 to 15%. It was very hard to nail them down on any actual numbers. It was quite frustrating.

I fueled up today and BOY was I surprised. 13.3mpg. I have never gotten anything in the 13's for my city mpg figures. Usually my city figures is between 11.8 and 12.3. The last 2 tanks were 12.7 and 12.8. BTW, my "city" driving habits are 60% street and 40% highway.
