Various and sundry...

Just thought I'd add to the data base.

Has anyone but me noticed the holes in the bottom of the air filter housing? When many of us worked hard trying to get our old anemic 4.0L V-6 in early Explorers more power we drilled holes in the air filter housing. This was the first step before you could afford a K&N or something similar. Seems Ford engineers liked the idea. I don't understand why they put the holes right where dust kicks up from the wheel though.

I recently installed a ball valve (3/4") in the intake side of the heating coil. This allows you in the summer to get relatively ambient air when in the "vent" mode versus air that has flowed near a hot heating coil. On the V-6 I put one on the discharge side as well and joined them so coolant could flow through. I've decided that this was lilly guilding though I might install another ball valve (minus the crossover)if heat is being transferred up the discharge hose.

What pressure are people running their 235/85 R 16s at? I know it's 65 front 80 rear for max load but what about unloaded?

Regards,

Re: Various and sundry...

If it's like the F150, the holes are for drainage.

Is the recommended pressure on the door placard for unloaded or loaded? I thought it was unloaded. I'd definitely want more air for max hauling.

Re: Various and sundry...

Never thought putting holes in for drainage. Let alone holes 1" in diameter. Now I'm worried; how the hell would all that water get in to a "closed" filter housing.

Tire pressure values on the door are for max load and nothing is listed for unloaded.

Re: Various and sundry...

Wow! 1" holes? They weren't that big on the F150s that I've had. May just be for additional air. If air can get into the housing- water can too.

Thanks for the clarification on the placard pressures.
