Vrrrrrrrr from engine

I have had my F350 4x4 for 2+ years, 37000 miles. At 34000 mi a Vrrrrr sound started comming from the engine when I decelerate.

Anyone else?
What could it be?

My dealer is giving me the go round, "It's normal." It was not for 34000 mi.

Re: Vrrrrrrrr from engine

Are you sure the sound is coming from the engine? Could be the front u-joint under torque reversal or maybe one of your front hubs is locked. Only thing that comes to mind on the engine right off is the motor mounts. I had a loose mount once that, under hard acceleration, allowed the engine to move enough for the fan to rub the shroud. Put the truck in reverse, and with the parking brake set (and open ground behind you) put a load on the engine and see if it makes this sound. Then back up a ways to see if the sound is coming from the driveline. I guess another possibility is a torque converter that is not locked up properly, but I don't know of a test for that. Hope you find a solution. It doesn't sound "normal" to me.

Re: Vrrrrrrrr from engine

SRL
Mine is too new to know.
Hope you got the extended warrenty or at least started the DEALER working on it before the 36,000 point.
This could be a benign problem with something loose or worn in the fan shroud area or it could be bad mojo going on in the power train, my limited knowledge would make me look carefully at the transfer case/ front prop/ front u-joints/locking hub

I don't use them yet but I bet Hal Harton Ford in Lampasas won't BS you. Of course most of their customers are country boys with TRUCKS so they are not prone to the "that's normal" BS I personally don't know any of the dealers in Austin but I have a gut that they would probably treat most customers as "dumb". Lipsche Subaru treated me that way and I don't go back and I don't recommend them any more.

Good luck brother.. let us know what it ends up being and what was the fix

On edit: I fully agree with SPORT's ideas and would just add that you sould identify and fix this problem....
Another thought.. have not heard in on a ford before but my budies GMC makes that kind of noise form the power steering pump (its full) and GM says it is normal

Re: Vrrrrrrrr from engine

Thanks for the replies. I tried the brake/engine load = no noise. The noise is only occasional, and only with decel. I have only been back in Texas for a short while. The dealer was in Columbia, SC. I'm gonna have the local guys check it out soon.

Re: Vrrrrrrrr from engine

"WHEN" I still had my '99 V10 truck, I had a similar noise-kinda like a vacuum leak type whistle-squeal noise. It did it worse when cold outside, and mostly when you kept a constant speed, like on the highway. MAN, was it annoying. I replaced u-joints, pulled on every hose and fitting. I had the dealership spend a day poking around, just to NEVER find it. As spring time approached, it did not do it as bad, and the day I left it at the dealer to pick up my new PSD, it still did it. Oh well, it's someone elses problem now. It had 50,000 miles on it, and started somewhere around 40,000 miles.

Off topic... while at your drag car web page I noted your comments about Fram oil filters.

Go to the link below and I think you will be interested.
