Just dropped off my truck to get the brakes looked at(warped rotors)The service writer told me that they are not covered under warranty after 12k miles or 1 year! I have 33k on the truck and the rotors were turned at 20k under warranty already. Can you believe this crap. I can't understand why Ford can't fix this problem. My old F150 had the same problem, I thought getting a HD truck would fix this, obviously not! Does anybody know if this should be covered under warranty.(I have the extended warranty too)
Check your owner's manual to see what is covered under the 3/36 warranty.
It does seem that there is a wide-spread problem with warped rotors, but I've not experienced it myself. However, I always use a torque-wrench vs "feel" or "air" to tighten the lugnuts. I also make sure they are tightened evenly and check them frequently. Over or uneven tightening can contribute to the warping of "weak" rotors faster than anything else.
Actually, that's a good question! I forgot that these things are hub-centric & the rotors don't have the lug bolts in them anymore. Guess that's what happens when you get old.
Had the rotors cut twice on my 99 250,finally replaced them at 41k.Ford did change the rotor thickness later in the 99 model year,but they will not retro fit to the earlier 99.If I still had the 99,I would install aftermarket crossdrilled rotors.Yes it is only 12/12 item.Improper lug torque,as well as uneven tightening can cause the rotor to twist on the hub,and cause pedal pulsation.
Does anybody know where I can get cross-drilled rotors for this truck? I heard that they can break if they get too hot too any truth to this? Anybody else running c-d rotors?
I have 32000 on my 99 superduty. Ford replaced both front rotors and both front hubs under warranty. Get your dealer to look at TSB#99-12-12. It says if your upgading from old style rotors to new, warranty will pay.
Just got my truck back from the dealer, they said the rotor run-out was .006 on the left front and .008 on the right front. So they turned them for the 3rd time even after I told them not too. I watched the service writer write it down. Man am I ever pissed off. Does anybody know what the max run-out is before they will replace the rotors? I was told .003 by another dealership, should have taken them there. Also they told me that they were the new style or upgraded rotor.
Hmmm, I've read about this rotor problem before. I always thought the fix for runout was to chuck them up and turn them. A guy who knows what he's doing will take off just enough to remove the runout. A friend use to do mine and sometimes it would take 4 passes and I would get 3-4 turns out of a set. Now with the people doing it your lucky to get 2.
Still I have a '99 sd lwb cc with 31k on it and I still have the original pads and rotors. I don't seem to have this problem. I know my old 150 4x4 I would take them in and have them turned about every 15k. Most time I wouldn't replace the pads. Just take the warp out.
But this is something I will have to keep an eye on.
Hello everyone;
I've read the replys on the brake situation. I've experenced the same problem on my Excursion. I have the 3-36 warntee and my dealer replaced the rotors with new ones. Only after 1500 miles. Although they did try to turn them first without success. They have been fine since then. Thought you would like to know some info. C/ya Andrew
Fords are known for easily warped rotors. The biggest cause, drivers riding the brakes and/or braking too hard too long creating way to much heat. If this happens, turn the rotors.
It is also known that they get heat cracks and can disintegrate causing you to have NO brakes. Turn them when they are warped and buy new ones if cracked at all.
