I'd like to get an Excursion for the wife. I've been looking for a 7.3 but their not easy to find & they are expensive. the V-10 on the other hand are much easier. Is this for good reason? Are these things really that bad on gas etc??
Thanks

I just about always average 13.5 mpg. It has the 4.30 gears. Driving conditions doesn't seem to change my mileage by much, maybe 1 mpg either way. 3.73's might help you on the highway more, but they may also hurt you worse in the stop and go.

A buddy of mine has a V10 Ex and loves it. It's not the greatest on gas, but nothing in that class of vehicle is.
Unless I planned to drive a LOT of miles, I'd pick a V10 over a PSD Excursion. IMO, the strengths of the diesel don't show up unless you regularly tow very heavy trailers (which are beyond the capacity of the lightly sprung, bumper pull only Excursion).
I probably agree. The extra money for a diesel, like $5,000, can buy alot of gasoline. Not to mention the difference in the price of gas vs diesel. Adding a Superchip and put it on economy and you'll see a big difference in shifting and performance.

The price difference used can be as much as a $10,000 difference between a V10 & a 7.3 PSD. For $10,000 buy the gas. When new, I paid $4,700 more for diesel, which would have paid for itself within 100,000 miles in fuel savings, & before fuel prices shot past gas prices, I figure the difference did pay for the engine option. My resale will be higher should I sell it, so for me it was a worth while investment. But now diesel is more, negating the savings, plus the new diesel engine's cost even more too.
I really like my diesel's, I have always wanted them & plan to drive them as far as they'll go, but vehicles are not a good investment & if I was shopping today for an Excursion, logically V10 it would be.

Most mileage quotes I see are 'optimistic' on the V10. It does depend on how hard you push them.

I just bought my wife one of the last new V-10 Excursions. So far it has been wonderful. My wife is averaging 11-12 mpg driving back and forth to work, the mall, etc. When we drive long distances it gets between 13-14. It also does a good job pulling our big boat and gets between 9-10. I really wanted a diesel, but as you said the prices are a little steep. FWIW I have no regrets.
9.8 in town, wife driving. Will show up to 16 on the freeway after resetting the overhead monitor, but starts dropping right away off the freeway. I would like to find a 2wd diesel for me.

A buddy who is an ex-dealer said the diesel makes no sense to him unless you can justify it (towing a lot and keeping it forever). He's ordered a new V-10. It will do what he needs for a lot less money. Diesel fuel prices are running higher than gasoline.
