In a previous post members mentioned that the noise my truck occassionally makes may be due to piston slap. What is piston slap ? Does it need to be corrected ? Can it be corrected ? Will it shorten the life of the engine ?
Piston slap is, simply put, the sound made by the piston "rocking" in the bore. It is usually caused by worn cylinders/pistons or in some cases by pistons with a very short skirt by design. I don't know what a V-10 piston looks like, but I would assume this is not due to a design problem but more to a wear problem, or manufacturing tolerances. The only way to correct piston slap is to overhaul the engine. The only problem it will cause is accelerated engine wear, possibly leading to excessive oil consumption.
Something GM has mastered with their Vortec engine line since '96 excluding the 4.3L V6. Some folks say its been solved, and others are still reporting problems with '05 and '06 vehicles.
They claim its 'normal' and deny its existence.
The Vortecs are also plagued with high oil consumption at low mileage.
A few Ford V-10's have it but its pretty rare among Ford engines relative to the magnitude of GM's problem engines.

Some days you're the dog.....Some days you're the hydrant.
My 99 developed it at about 20k miles. Back then Ford was replacing engines with this problem. By the time my dealer had an engine for me I was at 42K miles. The replacement was an FQR engine(remanufactured) I put 91k miles on that one without a lick of trouble. If you get a knocking sound at start up that lasts a minute or two then you might have it. Mine would also rattle as the rpms built befor it would shift. Once warm it was fine. No oil issues. By 2001 it should be cured. What oil filter are you using? I'd stick with Motorcraft FL820S.

I traded a 2000 GMC 5.3l in with 93K on it. Noticed the slap about a year after purchase, never experienced any issues. Never burned any oil nor noticed any metal in the oil. Just learned to live with it.

I realy am begining to believe GM on this one, I've had two vehicles with it now (a 01 Lumina & a 96 Cutlass supereme) and both have had it since the day I bought them. they both got loader over time and the colder it is the worse it is. The thing I believe is that it really won't cause any damage. The cutlass I sold at 178,000 miles give or take a couple and my work car (lumina) has it as we speak with 124k and neither use one drop of oil, both have as much power as they had as when they were purchaced. the oil stays clean and I have yet to see a problem caused by it. Take it with a grain of salt though. The Lumina sounds like a diesel for about 2 mins, my wife thinks I'm crazy but I've just come to live with it and for the most part I just try to let it warm up before I drive it hard.
On the other hand I now have my Ford V10 and a taurus for the wife and neither have it but both have under 40k on the clock.
I had an 01 K2500 Chevy HD with 6.0 gas motor. Had the piston slap at cold start. Called GM customer service, they sent me to dealer to verify concern. When verified GM sent me a letter saying engine warrantied to 100k. Truck was still running fine at 60K when I traded it in, no oil consumption between changes. Dealer told me 6.0 chevy pistons were very short causing wobble at start.
