white/gray smoke on start up

I noticed that on occation I get what appears to be a white/gray puff of smoke out the exaust when I start the truck up. It's a big enough puff that I see it blow by the passenger window if the wind is blowing in the right direction. The truck has 18K miles and almost all of them are highway miles. I know different color smoke, and when it smokes, means different things. Besides the puff of smoke, it runs great. I also have changed the oil every 3k miles. Could it be that it still has not broken in yet and gets some blow by when first started?!? If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate them?

Re: white/gray smoke on start up

Smoke from an engine is either going to be white (water), blue (oil), or black (gas). Since you said "gray", I am betting it is gas. Sounds to me like you have a leaking injector which is causing a rich condition on startup.

Re: white/gray smoke on start up

My truck has done this since new, but only under certain conditions. The truck has to have been started from a cold start and run for a very short time (like moving it from one side of the driveway to the other), shut down and allowed to cool. At the next start up I will get a small cloud of gray, stinky smoke. It's worse in my drive which is a fairly steep incline. The dealership tells me it's normal because the truck doesn't heat up enough to burn any excess gas from the system, so when I restart it, it is blowing out all the extra fuel/condensation. Runs great otherwise. 40,000 miles. My GM did a similar cloud later in life.

Re: white/gray smoke on start up

My 2002 with 700 miles did this one time that I noticed. I also seen a another persons 2001 do this. Like someone else said it seems to have to be just the right situation, like cold starts close together. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Re: white/gray smoke on start up

I thought I was the only one! Exact same situation, sometimes a pretty good snort of smoke I'd say.
My truck is at 27,000 and has done this since new. It runs stronger than ever though, just started with the 2,000 rpm flutter in the last 6,000 miles, can't decide to fix it or not(?) I will change the muffler (straight-pipe) after the initial warranty runs out at 36,000 miles.

Re: white/gray smoke on start up

Now that you guys mention it, it does only happen when I start and then shut her down w/o letting her warm up. Thanks for your replys - Foghorn

Re: white/gray smoke on start up

Glad to help. Isn't it a shame that F**d wants us to believe that smoke, and oil consumption, on a new vehicle are normal.... Other than that and the spring squeek, I still love my SD.
