Who needs a Diesel

HERE is a pic I snapped of my Father's truck pulling a pretty good load. Thought you V10 guys would get a kick out of it. It's a 2000 V10 auto with 4.30 rearend, It pulls pretty good. And actually gets decent mileage as long as you don't want to run 70 mph.

Re: Who needs a Diesel

I too am rethinking my next truck being a diesel. I have a '96 Dodge V-10. Just pulled 10,000 lbs.+ back from Wichita Falls into a 10-15 mph headwind. Locked out overdrive. No problems pulling at 60-65 mph. Running about 2400 rpm. Got 8-9 mpg.

Makes you wonder about spending an extra $5500 for the diesel, particularly now that diesel fuel runs 10% more than unleaded regular.

Re: Who needs a Diesel

Well actually I still think I need mine , but Dad's situation really doesn't warrant it. He's lucky to put 7,000 miles on a year. The old farm truck is a 1990 and just hit 130,000 on the ticker. Hell I've got 155,000 on my 99. Although if I were buying new, I'd be seriously considering a V10. But that wont happen any time soon.

Re: Who needs a Diesel

If they ever get around to putting the 3V V-10 in the E-350, it will have more horsepower and torque than the 6.0.

Same thing with my '96 Dodge. In '96, the V-10 had way more horsepower and more torque than the Cummins. My '96 V-10 will out pull a '96 Cummins. But I hear that the Cummins will easily get over 20 mpgs unloaded. I can only dream of 15.

Did it do 10-15 MPH? And a 3V V10 might have the horse but tourqe is what moves the world, try to match the TQ numbers, and MPG numbers, theirs a challenge.

Your kidding right?? Ran 60 mph all day, dropped to 55 on one hill but give it a break gross combined was over 31,000 lbs. Mileage was a little down, about 7.5 for 325 mile round trip. But then again I struggle to get 11 in my diesel with 10K lbs.

Re: Who needs a Diesel

11 hauling 10K i haul about 12 and get 14.5MPG but i drive an auto, not sure of the difference it would make. 7.5 the 4.30 gears probably help with that lol. I just see alot in the mountains at the high elevations dieing with a trailer. 33% power loss from sea level i think, the forced induction really helps up here.

The new 3V V-10 has more horsepower and the same 460lb. ft. of torque as the 2003 Dodge Cummins Standard Output. I'd say that's pretty impressive for a new era gasser.

Re: Who needs a Diesel

460 sounds way low for a cummins? Although i wouldnt buy a cum apart anyways, 6.0 600FT/lbs, and if you want more power you buy a 500 dollar chip, not a 3K supercharger.

Consider your self lucky, I have a hard time getting much over 15 empty. If I baby it and see all highway miles below 70 the best I have gotten is around 17.

Agreed. My early '99 PSD was 225/505. The new V-10 is 357/462.

I do agree with the earlier comments regarding NA versus turbo in the mountains. Pretty low around here, so that is not much of an issue for me.

Diesel is aready 10% higher than unleaded regular. With the new low sulphur regs coming in 2007, look for the spread to be even higher. Worse yet, the new diesel EPA regs mean that diesel mpgs will be coming down, but the cost of the diesel upgrade will be going up.

Like I said, going to be hard for the average Joe to justify the diesel upcharge.

Correct...but you're already $5k more with the diesel to start out with. Plus diesel costing more.

14.5 in the mountains pulling 10k. Really now.

Re: Who needs a Diesel

You can always make your own diesel, or other shady means. But what about all those bets i get from my buddies after wasting their gassers? I come out good still.

The objective of these trucks is NOT to race. Heavy duty gas engines can do the same thing a diesel can when geared right. I mean think about all those F-600's, F-700's and F-800's with the 240, 300, 331, 361, 391, 370, 429, 401, 477, and 534 cubic inch gas engines. They weren't put in there for looks, and they lasted a good 200k+ miles if they were in the least bit maintained and got the same fuel mileage as the diesels in those size trucks. Even the F-250's and F-350's with 390's and 460's, weren't slugs either, I mean they would blow away a non-turbocharged diesel, in horsepower and torque. Sure some of the smaller gas engines weren't fast, but they had low end grunt to get the load going and keep it moving.

The next time you race a gasser just remember, chances are they don't have a forced induction like your diesel does, so they are already at a disadvantage.
