Why buy a V-10

I'm in a new 2001 PSD Dually. Without getting into the details, I am likely to sell it and drop back a little.
Probably a S/C 2002 V-10: 1) because I want a quicker vehicle "out of the hole" and 2)the extra money for the diesel engine buys a load of gas.
And, while a nice new Lightning F150 would be sweet, it is hardly practical plus the significant other (wife), is not crazy about it. (but geez, will that Lightning run!!!!)
How about some feedback from the group.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Why buy a V-10

Sounds like you know what you want. I sometimes wish now I had held out fot the 350 even though I have never been close to the GVWR of my 250, other than that I am completely satisfied with mine.

Re: Why buy a V-10

If you are looking for reassurance, we all seem to be pretty happy with our gas engines. Frequent/heavy towing OR high-altitude vs. flat-land cruising with light loads will determine what to get (F350 vs F250 and 3.73 vs 4.30 gears).

The rest of the truck is essentially the same, so you already know about that aspect.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I really don't want to chip the truck because of warranty issues. Also, it is really a heck of a lot more than I need. For what its worth; I sold my beloved '99 to my father in law (a PSD SC). He needed a new truck and I could not bear the thought of him getting a bad deal from the local dealer on a used unit. My truck was absolutely perfect; Delvac 1 since 3000 miles, Mobil 1 in the auto-transmission and synthetic in both differentials. I had also done Bilsteins, spring update, ARE bed cover, Michelin tires, etc...
The dually is a wonderful truck but it is TOO much for my purposes. The diesel is nice but I love to romp on a big gas engine and listen to the "big dog eat". I heard a V-10 recently and I cannot remember hearing anything quite like it. A couple of country ladies toodling around in it and the driver knew what the "loud pedal" was for!

Re: Why buy a V-10

Hi Tom

If it were me, and as stated you don't have a need in Richmond for the massive truck you have then I would seriously consider the SC 4X2 V10 w/4.30:1 gears and the 4r100 Auto, I might also go with the short bed as I don't have any problems getting my Harley in it.

This shorter, lighter truck, gas powered, will be a rocket in stock form and when you up the tire diameter, add a good air intake and exhaust it will be a respectable stop light launcher and still get decent MPG. (not great MPG) It will run on 87 and I know that gas is less than diesel where you are.

Also the front end will be lighter and you will notice that the short WB lighter SuperDuty will feel like it turns on a dime instead of the three acres it takes you to turn that big long dually

Tell us what you trade for

Re: Why buy a V-10

Well, IMHO I would buy axactly what I have in my sig , except now that they offer the 6-speed with the V10, I would get that instead of the 5-speed.

I have towed heavy loads into the mountians and could always keep up with my Dad's 2000 PSD towing similar loads, so power is not an issue.

The only downpoint I can think of is the mileage, but I get 13 on average and my dad gets about 15-16 in his PSD.

Just my .02
