WHY DO THE GUYS WITH BIG TIRES RUN 16.5" RIMS?

I'VE BEEN WONDERING FOR A WHILE NOW AND I JUST CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. WHY DO YOU GUYS RUN 16.5" RIMS? WHY DON'T YOU STAY WITH THE 16'S? I WANT TO BE ABLE TO AIR MY TIRES DOWN TO ATLEAST 8 PSI OF AIR. I DON'T THINK I CAN SAFELY DO THAT WITH A 16.5" RIM. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Re: WHY DO THE GUYS WITH BIG TIRES RUN 16.5

True, 16" rims offer a better beadlock. However, there are a limited number of 'big' tires in the 16" size. The biggest I've seen is a 35" (or 315) in the 16" tires. With a 16.5" tire/wheel you have many more sizes to choose from in both tires and wheels.

15" rims also offer a bigger assortment of tires... prob the largest...... 15" is best actuall since the forementioned bead locking is better on a smaller (dia) rim.

I have aired mine down to 10-12 psi and have had no trouble.

Re: WHY DO THE GUYS WITH BIG TIRES RUN 16.5" RIMS?

you can air down a bigger rim..... but you do take the greater risk of breaking a bead..... i have done it on the trail down at 5 psi with 15 inchers on my old truck... it is no fun [censored] with that when you are on the trail....... just my two or three cents!
