this problem often occurs on many gasoline motors. what happens is called reverse petrol pressure, if your fuel filter gets parially clogged gasoline can be sucked in through the oil pump. this causes the oil to have a gassy smell.

Is it the CVCC (central vortex combustion chamber) model engine? If it is (they are carbureted), the carb may be the problem. If not, start with the fuel filter suggestion, I sold my rice burner about 15 years ago so i'm definately out of the loop on newer imports..
reverse petrol pressure.......must be in the same idealogy with repacking muffler bearings

The fuel smell is simply caused by cylinder washdown. The raw fuel on gas motors is compressed before ignited. Consequently some of the fuel/air mixture gets by the rings on compression and dillutes the oil with fuel.
The more the rings are worn the worse it is. This can also be caused by improper mixture(rich) or poor fuel atomization.

the vehicle is a 94 accord sedan 5 speed with 130K. It's my buddys car and he comes over to my joint to change the oil since he lives in a townhouse community and I have a single family home with parking pad...I didn't notice a gas smell at the last oil change. His idle is very funky when cold, racing and laboring alternatively very quickly, 1 second between labor and race. wonder if the two are related...ideas?
