"Y" pipe Vs. EGR causing "Flutter"

IMHO I would think that ANY changes to the headers or "y" piping would change the stock resonance and/or harmonics in the exhaust system. Therefore, wouldn't it be possible to affect the "flutter" by changing one or both of these components. Thus, that's why different guys are getting different "fixes" for the "flutter"?

By changing any components in the exhaust up to the Cat, I would think you would change the characteristics of this exhaust system. Isn't that why Banks added a "pickle" to their system? I bet its to distort the offending "flutter" or at least dampen it.
Since this is only guessing on my part, would you guys who have actually done exhaust work on these V10's enlighten me?
Thanks

Re: "Y" pipe Vs. EGR causing "Flutter"

My truck has no EGR system, but a bad case of the "flutters". The flutter is so bad, that it has been brought up as a possible contributor to my vibration problem. There doesn't seem to be an obvious pattern to flutter-ers.

Something I noticed while driving several new trucks recently. Those that had the least amount of flutter also seemed to have really black tailpipes. Those trucks with "cleaner" pipes were kind of noisy. My truck has a relatively clean pipe- not black & sooty at all. Perhaps the efficiency of the engine is contributing to the noise? Re: "Y" pipe Vs. EGR causing "Flutter"

NoMo,
Glad you're still keeping the chin up. I think the cleaner tailpipes=leaner running motors(?). Does yours have CA emissions? I haven't found that the emissions made any difference on the ones I drove. Actually, the only time I run in the "flutter" zone is with the camper on and out of o.d.. Other than that I'm usually running around 2000 rpm at the shift points (obviously not a lead foot )
Keep us apprised of your "vibration situation". Unfortunately its not "good vibrations" ala THE BEACH BOYS.

P.S. Stopped by your web site...cool. Now I KNOW what a NoMo is

Re: "Y" pipe Vs. EGR causing "Flutter"

Thanks. NoMo is a strange beast. Going into week 5 of an open service ticket. I've requested a DSB packet.

I've not driven a SuperDuty with an emissions pkg. The clean pipe was just an observation made when I was "test-driving" for vibration & noises. One of the loudest trucks was an '01 built 1 month after my '00. The truck had almost 500 miles on it and the pipe was pretty clean. The least noisy truck was an '01 built in Jan. that only had 12 miles on it. It's pipe was already much dirtier than either mine or the "old" '01. In all, I drove about 7 trucks. The "newer" ones seemed to have less flutter, but nastier pipes. All of them (except the oldest '01) had the "new" Y-pipe.

Again, just an observation. I didn't really make the connection until I saw these recent threads about the EGR system having an impact on flutter.
