Re: Alaska trip........
That's a great trip to make anytime of year in my mind. I grew up a stones throw from Clamgulch's spread and I guess I just got used to driving in the snow. Took my drivers test in 2 feet of the white stuff.
My favorite time of year up there is late summer/early winter(fall is so short I think I slept through it one year).
If it's scenery that your after, go in the summer months as the days get mighty short after that. If you dont like driving at night that's another reason to go June-Sept.
Prepare for ANY kind of weather regardless of season. I recall one 'quick' trip to Costco (3hrs one way at the time) that took me 2 days one fall. The snow got so deep I was pushing it with the bumper of my lifted 78'F250 and finally stopped me near Moose Pass. It snowed hard all night and wasn't until dawn that a snow blower came through and I could get the truck moving again. I had just rolled out the sleeping bag in the supercab and waited it out.
The Alcan is a woot to drive..fantastic views, as Clam mentioned, I'd take the Cassiar Hwy if you've got the time. Grab a good guide to B.C. on your way through, there's a lot of historical places to check out. Old ghost mining towns, even a "zoo" of sorts that I recall was more like a crazy guy with reindeer you could pet and some mangy bears and big cats.
My father just drove that route a few months ago in his 97'Super Duty and he ain't no spring chicken...in fact I think he might even be older than Clamgulch!! I think he's making another trip up and back this October as well. I think the best one way time I made from Soldotna to Seattle was 57 hours. That was a grim drive though.
Anyways, I'll be making that drive myself with the family next summer when I find out what date my 20th reunion is. So save some space for me Clam!
You know your on the Kenai when the vanity sink in your hotel room has a sign on it that says...
"Please do not clean fish in the room"
