Why dont we put this to a vote between a couple of places. Then worry about the rest as it comes.
I vote for Lake George in mid September...
It is a 3 hour drive for me but I think it would be the best all around site. Plenty of outlet stores, entertainment, lodging and Campgrounds. Plus it is only 45 minutes north of the Albany which is the centrally located place that I could see
Whatcha think?
Keith..

Make that two votes. Lake George is a primo site. Lots of stuff for families to do while we're all ogling each other's trucks!!
I have been to Lake George many times. There is an amusement park with water slides, great restaurants with authentic ethnic foods (one place had gelatos, an Italian premium ice cream better than anything Ben and Jerry's could come up with), water sports for those with boats and rental for them that don't, hiking easy mountains there with vistas you would not believe, harder mountains in the High Peaks further north, concerts down at SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center), historic tours, bookshops, boutiques, even a pretty good Kentucky Fried over at Aviation Mall! Lake George is NY's best-equipped vacation spot, with things to keep almost every member of the family happy enough not to be bored while the boyz with their toyz crawl in and out of each other's rigs. The place EXISTS for tourism - going there after Labor Day will mean the crowds should be down. It is a great spot.
Whoever sets organizes this should give serious thought to how easy it would be to piggyback on the facilities at Lake George. It would probably save beaucoup time and effort.

Don't take my word for it! Go to www.lakegeorge.com for a lot of information!
I did not know that they had moonlight steamboat dinner cruises! My wifey just cast her vote also - dang, that means wearing a tie with my dress sweats!

My best friend is the Chief Engineer for the Lake George Steamboat Company. Pretty much the number 2 man. Don't think the moonlight cruises are running after Labor day, but both the Lac Du St Sacrament and the Mohican are running daily up until columbus day. They also have the steam powered paddlewheeler, the Minnie Ha Ha.
As for location, since I live 6 minutes from Lake George, I'll void my vote.

Rich: Thanks for the pointer! Bummer, we'll be in Rochester for June and July but heading back South the first of August for reservations at Hilton Head.
Lake George is a great area. (course it was named after me! ) Went to college in Pottsdam but that was a long time ago. Had to fight the Indians to get to class!
